About this deal

Lost in Egypt, with nowhere to go and no allies to rely upon, they’re about to make some startling discoveries about Nahri’s past and Ali’s mysterious connection to the marid.

A rich Middle Eastern fantasy…Against [a] syncretic yet nonderivative and totally credible backdrop, Chakraborty has constructed a compelling yarn of personal ambition, power politics, racial and religious tensions, strange magics, and terrifying creatures, culminating in a cataclysmic showdown that few readers will anticipate…Best of all, the narrative feels rounded and complete yet poised to deliver still more. A woman who uses her looks to garner insider information, sets up a real estate consulting firm to sell what she knows. He wanted to stop being a warrior controlled by others but he also felt a sense of duty to the Nahids.

Through her medical and community work, Nahri had developed a following there, and feels responsible to her followers for trying to repair the damage her mother has done. However, at times, it did feel as though it took the wind out of the sails after the chapters with Dara. I really wish we could get a spin off book about Dara’s adventures freeing the relics it would be so cool. I don’t want to be too spoilery here, but for a book with a high body count generally, it seemed strange that more of the main characters didn’t end up dying. And the notion that a rightful heir is ordained by a higher power and will rule wisely if only he or she can assume their rightful place. Especially because I knew there was no reason for them to be sad, so I just wanted to jump into the book and tell them everything was fine. After their father dies, Tae-joo, along with his mother, raises his little sister Hee-joo on his own, and fights tooth and nail to rise to the top relying on his cunning wits. Having narrowly escaped their murderous families and Daevabad’s deadly politics, Nahri and Ali, now safe in Cairo, face difficult choices of their own.

On the one hand, it’s nice to be reminded of prior events, to ease one’s way back into this world of djinn and politics and strange magic, on the other hand, it makes for somewhat slow reading during the first ahlf of this book. So, they decide to head back to Daevabad but along the way they encounter a very powerful and ancient Marid. It’s a realistic portrayal of such a conflicted character with an ending that is earned if not feel-good. I have never done that before in the history of my reading experience after finishing a book - well maybe only one other time - but certainly not since The Empire of Gold, that’s for sure. Back in Daevabad, Dara is questioning himself about the actions that he has taken and starts to struggle with conscience about his past and what he could have done differently. If this is your introduction to the Daevabad trilogy, stop right now, catch the next available flying carpet, go back to The City Of Brass and treat yourself to the first two wonderful books in this series, or I will sic a shedu and a piri on you. I’m forever going to be bitter about how Chakraborty prioritized the “romance” over all the politics in this book because that seems to be the reason why everything needed to be so rushed at the end. Today I am reviewing one of my most anticipated reads for 2020 and the final installment in the Daevabad trilogy – The Empire of Gold. Empire of Gold ( Korean: 황금의 제국; Hanja: 黃金의 帝國; RR: Hwanggeum-eui Jeguk) is a 2013 South Korean television series starring Go Soo, Lee Yo-won, and Son Hyun-joo.
