About this deal

The Command and Mode dials are easy to operate with your right thumb, and the power switch and shutter fall naturally under the influence of your index finger. It can be quite annoying to get the camera back from the lab with this mode enabled, but at least it doesn't reset itself after each shot. Focusing and zooming without introducing significant camera twist and shake was difficult when using the kit lens. Speaking of Live View, it can be accessed by way of a dedicated Lv button on the back of the camera, just as on the D90. No DX camera, regardless of rated ISO, is anywhere near as clean as any of the FX cameras like the D3, D3X and D700.

Instead, you should hold the Nikon D5000 by the lens with your left hand, then lower the LCD and turn it to the right. The overall length of the D5000 is greater, both thanks to the articulating LCD and the longer lens. The Nikon D5000's new hinged LCD design offers a lot of versatility, but hinging the screen at the bottom also presents some problems that left-hinge designs avoid. Indeed, certain tripod heads with quick release levers on the back will prevent you from opening and twisting the LCD at all, including most Manfrotto designs. Not only is the D5000 the same as, or a little quieter than the LEICA, the D5000 winds itself at the same time, while the LEICA still needs to wind film. As with stills, recording video from multiple angles is easier when you can turn the LCD to face multiple directions. Metering Range 1) 0 to 20 EV (Matrix or center-weighted metering); 2) 2 to 20 EV (Spot metering) (ISO 100 equivalent, f/1. It's important for enthusiasts to know that the Nikon D5000's pop-up flash doesn't serve as commander flash for external SB-600, SB-800, and SB-900 flashes as does the D90.

The Nikon D5000, however, has a dedicated Live view button on the back, just right of the LCD, within easy reach of the thumb. Still, articulated displays are very useful for getting unusual shots, and sometimes they're the only way to get a shot at all. Many tripod quick release mechanisms will block the Nikon D5000's LCD from rotating at all, let alone tilting down to face forward or backward. You have to remember to hit the shutter release twice to get both of your shots -- it doesn't save two files for each shot -- but it's a helpful feature if you're unsure of your lighting. For those on the move, GPS-compatibility with Nikon’s GP-1 unit will come in handy when pinpointing shooting locations as will the HDMI output when you finally want to present your great shots to your family and friends. The LEICA is almost as quiet as a D5000 in Quiet Mode, and by comparison, every other copy of the Leica is far noisier.

High ISO (up to 6400) is usable with minimal noise, plus the quiet shutter release mode means that I was able to use it at an awards ceremony where one of my daughters received a certificate without drawing attention to myself. After you take a picture and an image pops on the screen, if you spin the dial to get to other images as you can do on other Nikons, instead of changing to the other pictures, the D5000 accidentally interprets that input as thinking you want to change your exposure settings. This is a selection of sample images from the Nikon D5000 camera, which were all taken using the 12. Swinging down and flipping the LCD is counter-intuitive to me, because it turns the wrong way for easy left-hand operation. The RGB sensor may not be able to help focus on an object, but it can add a set of data for the Nikon D5000 to use while tracking a subject with the autofocus system. Live view on the Nikon D5000 is best used on a tripod, where you can move the AF point around and let the camera do its work slow and steady. The D5000, like the D40, D40x and D60, lacks most of the D90's extra control buttons that make the D90 such a masterpiece.
