About this deal

aspect ratios, the native 4K transfers are notably brighter than their respective Blu-ray counterparts, thanks to the boosted contrast balance. There’s plentiful gloss to this do-over, giving the action more splatter while updating character archetypes. Night may have sown the seeds of the zombie genre, but Dawn kicked the doors down and helped it become one of horror’s biggest subgenres (aside from the slasher perhaps) and a cultural phenomenon. Burrell says he prefers running zombies, but also says that they went for a more action movie approach than social commentary.

As is the case with the other cuts, optional subtitles are available in English for the Hard of Hearing. The final audio commentary for the European version from Disc Three features the main cast: David Emge, Ken Foree, Scott Reiniger, and Gaylen Ross. Ana is naturally the center of attention, and Sarah Polley is above reproach for playing the terrified, but hardened nurse who does what needs to be done, yest still exercises her conscience. The aforementioned monoaural track is the only option available for the Cannes Extended cut, and it sounds fantastic. I still love Dawn though (as well as Day), so I, like most horror/genre movie fans in the UK, was thrilled to hear that Second Sight Films were releasing an exhaustively well-stuffed box set of Dawn of the Dead on both UHD and Blu-ray.

Low bass isn't particularly noteworthy, but it's adequate and plenty for providing the action and music some weight. We’re proud to promote an environment that allows for discourse benefiting everyone (newcomers to the experienced) and owners of all levels of gear (affordable to the high-end) while encouraging open and friendly conversation. The subsequent US Blu-ray release from Anchor Bay also featured a Fast Film Facts trivia subtitle track, which is also absent. The movie isn’t perfect, but Snyder did a great job for his freshman effort as a director, and James Gunn (yes, of Guardians of the Galaxy fame) did a stellar job at writing the blood soaked script. When boiled down, the simple message of ‘having everything, but having nothing’ still resonates because it is told so matter-of-factly and with such enthusiasm one is just captivated.

I used to feel Dawn of the Dead was a little overlong, dragging its feet more than Night, but I didn’t get that sense at all this time around. Dialogue is always clear and discernible, while the score and music selection have plenty of good fidelity.

Intense, blood soaked, and a thrill ride from beginning to end, I still enjoy it as much as, if not more, than the Romero original. The Extended (‘Cannes’) cut, which some prefer due to its extended scenes, but for me this is off set by the slightly slower pacing. The WGC and HDR lend themselves to vivid colours and pop from the screen, the blood had never looked so intense. The back speakers get involved too, but they really excel in some delicious zombie ambiance that haunts both the outside and the halls of the mall. One Blu-ray disc contains a set of new supplements for hours of entertainment, and all three versions of the film are given their own dedicated 4K Ultra HD disc.
