About this deal

Overall, easy to drink and pleasant palate, but lacks a bit in character, especially the finish needs more power. Prior to that very little from the distillery was available outside of the independent bottling scene. Matured in American oak barrels and finessed by three different types of sherry cask to complement the sweet, mellow flavour of Tamnavulin. Distilled on 3 November 1978 at Tamnavulin, this single malt spent the next 22 years in a pale Oloroso sherry butt. In 1995 Tamnavulin closed its doors for a period of time, before opening again in 2007 under new ownership.

The single malt would be a great way to introduce someone to the sherry cask matured genre of Scotch whisky without giving them anything too heavy. Nose: Chocolate mousse, extra thick double cream with a dusting of brown sugar, stewed apples and blackberries. The Tamnavulin Sherry Cask Edition is bottled at 40% and is widely available in the UK in both supermarkets and specialist retailers alike. Please read our Privacy Statement for more information on our use and processing of your personal information. Woefully, the Tamnavulin is rather typical of 1960s-constructed distilleries and the exterior is decidedly industrial, in stark contrast to its markedly stunning locality. It is no 'sherry bomb' or 'sherry monster', but displays some deliciously subtle aromas and flavours. Distilled in 2009, this Tamnavulin spent the next 13 years in a pair of barrels: one refill, and one virgin oak.

This blog includes regularly updated tasting notes of all manner of whisky from the popular, inexpensive ones to the limited edition, rare bottlings. As it is, the Tamnavulin Sherry Cask is a decent wee dram that won’t break the bank, and there’s nothing at all wrong with that. The Tamnavulin whisky distillery had previously been silent for over a decade, having been mothballed in May of 1995.The three pairs of stills at Tamnavulin have a total capacity of four million litres annually, though this has yet to be reached. At the time, its most interesting asset was the eponymous grain distillery located in the Northern Highlands of Scotland. Under the new ownership, there has been the addition of new staff as well as increased working hours; Tamnavulin now operates seven days a week, which should bring production to near full capacity. As always I will strive to give an honest and impartial opinion on the quality of the dram and the value for money it represents.
