As I get the palette ready. I run the palette paper under the running water. I like to turn it over to make sure that it is fully saturated. This helps the paper to stretch without tearing and have proper surface tension. How to thin your paint on a wet palette There are numerous retail options of acrylic wet palette available. Most notable is the Everlasting WetPalette from RedGrass Games. I have both the Painter and Studio Model. I really like these palettes but the paper you get doesn’t act like shown above and this is what I’m used to. It certainly has other benefits but with the little ah-ha moment I’ve shown below. A wet palette is made of just 3 things. 1. A container, 2. A layer of water-absorbing material such as tissue or sponge and 3. (Technically Optional) a layer of semi-permeable paper.
Fine art oil painting papers are acid-free, with the majority being made of wood-free cellulose pulp. Arches Huile paper is the exception, being made of 100% cotton. As a result it is considered a professional grade paper, with a longer lifespan than wood pulp paper because it can better withstand changes in humidity and temperature. The long fibres of cotton also give the paper strength and the ability to withstand rough handling and wiping without easily tearing. And here comes the deal: Thanks to the unique coating you can rinse the membrane under tap water and rub off any remaining paint with your fingers or a soft brush. As long as the paint retained some of its moisture you will be able to remove it very easily, and it shouldn’t be a problem to repeat this process up to ten times, just as promised by Redgrass Games. The new Everlasting Wet Palettes 2 have been substantially re-engineered for a sleeker look and a better seal. The Painter 2 palette is 3cm longer than the original Painter palette, but still more compact than the Studio XL palette. The updated Studio XL 2 palette will retain the same size as the original Studio XL. I’ve reviewed the original Everlasting Wet Palette in the Painter edition, and liked it alot. Some people are a little concerned about using metallic paints on their wet palettes. They think that the metal flakes will get into their sponge and then transfer from the sponge into their non-metallic paint contaminating it. The metal flakes from the paint are larger than the regular pigment in the paint. So if the red pigment embedded in your sponge doesn’t turn your white paint pink, you can rest assured that the metallic flakes also can’t pass through the paper to contaminate the paint on top of the palette.
