About this deal

Carlo Goldoni’s The Servant of Two Masters is rooted in the tradition of the commedia dell’arte, a highly influential form of improvisational comedy popular in Italy between the 16th and 18th centuries. Florindo asks Pantalone for permission for his servant, Truffaldino, to marry Clarice’s maid, Smeraldino. Goldoni skilfully adapted the comedia dell'arte pattern to his own very funny plots, and the most famous of the resulting plays is The Servant of Two Masters. Additional shots - using "doubles" for Shaw and Collins - of tailing Cowley as he drives to Hahn's place.

As she implants the Fomorroh into Merlin's neck, she gives him his instruction: he must kill Arthur Pendragon. The problem arises from the fact that Federigo had originally been promised Clarice’s hand in marriage. The Servant of Two Masters“ adaptated and performed by Grupo de Teatro do Instituto Superior Técnico (GTIST) in Lisbon, Portugal, as "O Servidor de Dois Amos". The problem with this episode is that the viewer knows Cowley too well by this point to believe he would sell out.Hoping to abate her displeasure, Argravaine draws his sword to kill Merlin, but Morgana stops him, saying she will use Arthur's fondness for Merlin against him. By this time, Gaius and Gwen have realised that something is wrong with Merlin and that he is trying to harm Arthur. At the Young Vic, audience and actors were engaged in a complicity of enjoyment, but at the New Ambassadors that has somewhat evaporated.

Arthur rebukes Merlin for his two-day absence and sentences him to learn how to be a proper manservant from George. They joke about death and glory while Arthur assesses Merlin's injuries, and at the end of the conversation, Arthur somberly acknowledges Merlin's bravery and loyalty and Merlin thanks Arthur for saving his life. But something curious has happened to Tim Supple's Royal Shakespeare Company production since it first played London at the Young Vic almost a year ago.Mistaken identity in theatre is an idea as old as the hills, but when done well, as it is here, the results are often hilarious, occassionally very moving and extremely satisfying. In 1783 his company moved to a new theatre on the street now known as the Boulevard des Italiens; they merged with the Théâtre Feydeau to form the Opéra-Comique in 1801. The play begins in the Venetian house of Pantalone, where a party is underway to celebrate the engagement of Clarice, daughter of Pantalone, to Silvio, son of Doctor Lombardi.

I didn't see the recent London production of the play, but heard such good word of mouth, that I sought out this script. First performed at York Theatre Royal 26 August 2006 by Northern Broadsides, directed by Barrie Rutter. The rockfall blocks the mercenaries' path to Arthur, but also cuts off Merlin from the king, resulting in his capture. It would perhaps have worked a little more credibly had the doctor's surgery scene - where Cowley is told to take it easy and look forward to retirement - had been placed at the beginning of the story. Full marks to Dominic Kinnaird, who also plays a camp waiter, for choreographing such convincing fight scenes, and to John Candor who plays perky period Italian music on his clarinetto. Arlechinno, a cunning servant, gets a lucky break finding himself engaged in the service of two masters. Truffaldino accepts Florindo’s offer, determining that if he is clever he can serve two masters and easily double his income. Unlike Truffaldino, he is sometimes depicted as having risen through the ranks of servitude to become an innkeeper or tavern owner, as in The Servant of Two Masters.
