Spoilers start below ⚠️I also liked that in this retelling, Midas ended up not being the one with the gilding touch at all. i finished this book like a week ago and genuinely don't remember enough about it to review it so i must have started skim reading at the 75% mark. She is unhappy in her golden cage but she is happy anytime he pays attention to her, when he leaves the women he has sex in front of her and caresses her hair through the cage she is happy and convinced she means everything to him.

The third newbie is on her knees in front of the male, sucking his length like poison from a snake bite. Poor weeping women can’t do anything to defend themselves but still find the good in life blah blah.Still, we can see how her trust in him slowly cracks and how her blinded love and devotion start to erode as she realizes how badly Midas can treat her when it suits him. CAN I JUST SAY I'M SO HAPPY THAT THIS BOOK AND MY SWEETEST FRIEND LYRA GOT TO BE MY FIRST BUDDY-READ? But when political upheaval sees me sent across kingdoms to a future I no longer understand, everything I thought I knew about King Midas is shattered . Despite the riches she lives in, she still feels a sense of sympathy and sadness towards the devastating reality of the world outside of Highbell.

To give you a taste of the story, I'll try my best to summarize it in a way that is not very spoiler-y.

I’m not sure what made me borrow the entire published series so far from my library (books 1-4) but here we are. The rulers of a kingdom must have magic, and that magic comes from faes that mingled with humans long ago before the ruler of the fae decided to cut ties with the humans and destroyed the magical bridge that linked both realms. She's been kept in a cage for years and no one is allowed to touch her except King Midas and he doesn't touch her that often.

Auren desperately wants friends and basic social interactions, and we can see her slowly coming out of her shell, and I can’t wait for her to realize how badly Midas is treating her. It’s on this journey Auren comes into her own having to dig down deep discovering reserves of strength she thought she was no longer capable of.I have fought the terrifying Red Raid Pirates, endured the murder of those I care about, and survived the frozen planes of Orea, only to find myself a prisoner of the army of Fourth Kingdom.
