About this deal

If you’re dyeing just one or two items, maybe try the dauber method. If you’re dyeing many of the same, or very expensive items where the dye cost is relatively minimal, dipping can be great. It will provide for an even consistency, penetration, and overall color finish. Airbrush Dyeing The belly cut of a leather hide is from the left or right edges of the hide. The belly of animals naturally expands and contracts as food and water are consumed. This makes the belly leather a little softer, and stretchier, than from other areas of the hide. While not considered prime leather, belly cut leather can be used for a variety of leather working uses. Double Belly Leather Cut When dyeing leather, with any technique, it’s usually best to apply the dye in light, even coats. This will allow for an even, consistent application across the leather piece. It will also allow for more subtle variations in the final color choice, since the color has been applied in layers, getting a bit darker each time. Leather is praised for its natural look and distinct scent and feel, yet, the grain can be problematic in some situations. Degraded leather is one that has had the top grain polished or sanded off, making it as smooth as a baby's bottom! Degrained leather is as bland and inviting as a milk pudding.

Finishes are the topcoats and the last things you put on your leather to either preserve its dyes or treat the leather. Some finishes are more water-resistant than others.

When grading raw hides, the inspectors will look for issues including holes, deep cuts, scars, large abrasions, discolorations, machine damage (from the skinning machines), remaining hair, and grain inconsistencies. The longer the antique finish stays on the leather, the more color the leather will take and the darker the receding portions become. Semi-Aniline Finish Leather – Semi-aniline finish leather is aniline dyed or stained using a small quantity of pigment so that the natural characteristics of the hide is visible. This is first saturated in dyes and later on given light coating of dyes and pigments on the surface. The treatment of semi-transparent stains provides protection against fading but do not completely obscure the surface. This type of leather would be considered next to aniline leather.

The above two images are of the seat thoroughly coloured. As standard the leather has a slight shine to it. This can be either increased using a gloss finish, matted down using a matt finish or kept the same using a satin finish. In this case we used a satin finish to match the original sheen. It is then finished with a thin protective coating to help prevent fast wear of the leather, or any other staying or discoloration from showing up on the surface. This can be a visually appealing dye approach, since it does allow the original surface of the leather to show through. Semi Aniline Leather Generally, a very simple paint brush will work great. Detail isn’t so much important here as is proper coverage of the dye onto the leather piece. Rag/Cloth Dyeing leather can get a little messy, so it’s important and very helpful to have everything prepared ahead of time. Usually, being prepared will also make the process go much faster and more smoothly. That will make it more fun, and the end results looking great. Work Area – Ventilation Granite is well-known for being one of the strongest natural materials. The finish chosen can affect the care and lifespan of the granite countertop. Since it is a natural stone, it does require continual maintenance like sealing to keep it looking its best and performing for years to come.

Number one hides are top grade hides. They generally have no major surface imperfections, holes, or cuts. If there are holes approximately 3-4 inches from the edge of the hides, and they can be trimmed away, they won’t affect the overall grade. About 80% of hides shipped to tanners should be a number one grade. Leather Hide Grade – Number Two Lacquering is another finishing method of applying a thin layer of lacquer onto the surface of leather products to give it a protective layer and a nice sheen. While the clear type of lacquer finishes like most finishes produce a high gloss finish, it’s, however, difficult to apply when spirit solvent dyes have been applied to the leather. This is because the lacquer ends up reacting to the color of the product. Those surface fibers are also what give it the most strength of any leather type. This makes it good for saddlery, footwear, and furniture. Since the outer layer isn’t removed, it develops a patina (a surface color change from use) over time that can be pleasing to the eye. The outer layer also provides some water-resistance qualities as well. Full Grain is looked upon as the highest quality leather available. Top Grain Leather This leather has great strength and durability as the grain remains on the skin. The full-grain leather is available in two types of finishes called aniline and semi-aniline and it is generally used for the making of highest quality furniture, luggage and footwear. Dyeing on dry leather is a very common method. The dye is applied directly to the surface of the material, and is pulled into fibers. It is usually easier to dye dry, especially for those new to dyeing. Since there is no water involved, one can see exactly where the dye has been applied and how much is needed to result in an even coat.
