About this deal

However, this isn’t so easy to do with the Kill Team Starter Set. Whilst all the miniatures in the box are available in their own individual kits, a lot of the value of this box lies in the other stuff that comes with it to help you actually play the game, such as the rules books and the combat gauges.

This number of miniatures you build can be increased from 10 to 11 if you decide to build one particular variant of the medic, whose satchel occupies its own base. Whilst we’re on variant builds, most of the guardsmen have two if not three different variations they can be built in, so make sure you take your time selecting the variant you want. Area Secured – at the end of the battle, score 1 Victory Point for each objective marker you control. There is something to watch out for when building him, though: his right foreleg, the surface of which is curved, is joined to the sprue by a surprisingly large gate. Cutting it neatly is difficult, and it’ll require quite a bit of clean up after. Warhammer 40,000 Kill Team: Pariah Nexus Review – Necrons I do wonder if maybe, much like the Warhammer 40,000 Recruit, Elite and Command Edition Starter Sets, originally GW had planned for three such “edition-style” starter sets for Kill Team, but the idea was scrapped. That would at the very least explain why the Recruit Edition book – which would be much better named as something like “Starter Book” or “Beginners Guide” – has something of a jarring name. Wargear And finally, the Morale Phase. Here, the psychological will of your units is put to the test to see if they’re broken or shaken. That effectively means that, Octarius aside, for existing Warhammer collectors and players, this edition of Kill Team is twice as expensive to start as its predecessor was in 2018. Meanwhile, if you’re a prospective new Warhammerist intrigued by the new Kill Team, but don’t own any models yet, it’s even pricier, as you’ll have to buy:

As ever, the artwork on the box is outstanding. Depicting an intrepid team of retail workers dealing with some average Saturday customers the Death Korps of Krieg facing off against the rampaging Ork Kommandos, the box cover sets the tone for Kill Team: cramped, claustrophobic, and brutal. The other issue with the Recruit Edition guidebook is that, at times, it’s not very well-written, nor very well-formatted. At the end of round 5, with the Space Marines almost at full strength and the Necrons down to their final figure and final wound, it was all over for the Necrons. Victory Points were tallied up, and the game ended. The remaining three missions continue in a fairly similar vein, with certain concepts being explained in good, clear terms, and others feeling a little murky. In Mission 2, for example, line of sight and cover are explained, but once again not necessarily in the most beginner-friendly of fashions.

The Pariah Nexus book contains the details you need to play six matched play missions, each designed to offer a balanced battle for two Kill Teams. The book even comes with a handy D6 table to help you choose which mission to do: Objective Ultima, Purge, Secure the Facility, Flush them Out, Storm the Redoubt and Supply Hoard. As far as I can tell, the double-sided game mat has the same (and if not the same, a very familiar) print on it to the gaming board that came with Kill Team: Octarius.

Engage on All Fronts – 1 Victory Point at the end of each battle round for a figure in each quarter of the map There are also plenty of variant builds again – most of the time each Kommando can be built in at least one if not two alternate ways, with different weapon options and slightly different poses. There are two books in the Kill Team Starter Set. One is the all-important (and oddly named) “Recruit Edition” book, which is essentially a beginners guide designed to teach brand-new players of Kill Team all the stuff they need to get playing. However, due to the layout of the terrain, there was nothing they could do at the end of their turn as the Space Marines were out of range and could not be seen. Space Marine Turn 1 All of which, to me, makes the question of how to approach Kill Team 2nd Edition something of a no-brainer, for a new player at least: if you can get hold of Octarius, and you’re tempted by the new edition, go for it. I can wholly recommend it as a complete game-in-a-box, and a highly enjoyable introduction to the new game.

For fans of the game with some space marines models already in hand, this pairing of FREE rules is a great way to get started. Note that the lite rules do not cover everything, but this document does have the basics so you can sit down and roll some dice with friends. For people worried about power levels the Intercession link can be pared down to models with the “Warrior” or “Gunner” names. This will keep the # of rules to a minimum and pairs perfectly with the Lite rules for a first game or two. Still, after a couple of games, minor assembly niggles fade into insignificance – and the book-passingfaff ceases to be a real concern, as you’ll have memorised most of the key bits and bobs for both Kill Teams by then. Octarius is, for the most part, a well put together, well presented starter set – and, once you settle into this game’s rhythm, you won’t mind so much about the stumbles along the way, because (spoiler) Kill Team 2.0 is a really good game. Diving straight into the plastic, the Space Marine part of the box sets a very tough act to follow. What I always find amusing about the art on these boxes is how, rather like in the Avatar: The Last Airbender TV series, in spite of the chaotic battle taking place between two heavily-armed and bloodthirsty factions and all the sharp edges, shooty bits and explosions, no one appears to have been even remotely injured. At least, in Kill Team they do. Firefights take place in such close quarters that very few weapons need to worry about range, and most can shoot from one side of the killzone to the other. What’s better than having your own personal objectives to compete for? Keeping them secret from your opponent and revealing your victory with a dramatic flourish, that’s what. 8. Jump Out at Orks and Shout Boo Rob has spent most of the last 15 years playing World of Warcraft and writing stories set in made-up worlds. At some point, he also managed to get a Master's degree by writing about Medieval zombies. Additional Accessories: Get straight into the game with a double-sided game mat, a Kill Team token sheet containing 85 tokens, and 10 dice. The second of the factions available in Kill Team: Rogue Trader, the Elucidian Starstriders are a faction of smugglers that revolve around specific named characters. Like the Gellerpox Infected, once a player owns this box, they have access to each unit in the entire faction, making it quite accessible.
