About this deal

So when Kate Hibbert disappears after having last been seen struggling along the road with a heavy suitcase, he is convinced she has gone travelling and reluctantly goes through the motions of investigating. Gregor hated Hibbert but, while she never claimed they were the best of friends, Clara tolerated her at first. Known as the “Queen of Crime” (The Globe and Mail), she was born in Scotland and started her career writing historical romances under several pseudonyms as well as her maiden name, Marion Chesney. As a long time reader of the series, I miss the light charm that used to fill a Hamish Macbeth book, which I read for fun and light entertainment.

I keep thinking that the series will go back to the way it was with its original author because I like the characters and the setting, but apparently that is not happening. She is consistently the most borrowed UK adult author in British libraries, and her Agatha Raisin books have been turned into a TV series on Sky. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. In this addition to a New York Times bestselling mystery series, Sergeant Hamish Macbeth—Scotland's most quick-witted but unambitious policeman—investigates the disappearance of a local woman who is more than she seems. Interviewing those who were closest to her, Macbeth is perplexed by their apparent lack of concern but sees no reason to suspect foul play.Making his way down the slope, he took a look behind the mound that had obscured his view only to find the track deserted. W. Green’s first outings as the successor to Marion Beaton’s Hamish Macbeth series, and he captures [Macbeth's] charm . If you haven't read the previous book in the series "Death of a Green-eyed Monster," you will want to read it before this one. Green, now on his own with this and the Agatha Raisin series, is an expert of Beaton’s work through his friendship and detailed discussions with her about the characters, the environment, and the crimes to investigate.

Let's hope this is a sign of stories to come, as R W Green really can't put himself in the alter ego of Agatha Raisin at all. When Hibbert does eventually resurface, however, a storm of lies, intrigue and scandal threatens Macbeth's tranquil village of Lochdubh. But, for us arm-chair detectives, we’re left to ponder who the killer is until late in the drama when a surprise death exposes the main suspect. Clara never complained, but Hibbert kept on about it until, in the end, he’d been forced to agree that Clara shouldn’t be carrying the peat and that he needed to do something about it.

Part of the attraction is that in Beaton's fictional world the characters hardly age at all, they are set in a timeless cozy world of either Macbeth's Scottish Highlands or Raisin's English Cotswalds. Suspects kind of all blended together (maybe they wouldn't have if I had read some other books in the series? That said, taken on its own, this is an enjoyable book set in the Scottish Highlands with an older, sadder, wiser lead character.

When that didn’t work out, they went to Virginia and Marion worked as a waitress in a greasy spoon on the Jefferson Davies in Alexandria while Harry washed the dishes. Hamish Macbeth is one of my favorite mystery series to read, but I was worried that Hamish would have a different feel when R.She was perfectly outlined against the distant view of Lochdubh and she appeared to be struggling with a large suitcase, dragging it down the rutted track. But, sadly, her body is found floating in The Corloch anchored with ropes and rocks; not the outcome for which Hamish hoped. Lots of weird dialogue like Hamish speaking perfect English then lapsing back into his Scottish lilt.

Although she has been a resident of the sleepy village of Lochdubh for only a year, in that time Kate has alienated one too many of its residents with her interfering—and not entirely well-intentioned—ways. C. Beaton was the queen of ‘cosy’ crime, with her two principle detective series, Hamish Macbeth and Agatha Raisin, proving phenomenally popular with readers. I love Hamish, so will continue to read any books that might follow, but I hope the story line gets closer to Beaton's style. This Hamish Macbeth novel maintains Beaton’s distinctive voice and includes the usual village eccentrics, loads of Scottish lore, and the light humor that Beaton fans have loved through the years. Once he had a view of the track and the road running along the loch-side, he raised his binoculars again.By completing your purchase, you agree to Audible's Conditions of Use and authorise Audible to charge your designated card or any other card on file. I don’t like the plain purple background with the title splashed across it and a dog that doesn’t reference the story. Torn between loyalty to Lochdubh and his job, Hamish begins threading his way through a maze of deceit, quickly finding himself on the trail of a ruthless, treacherous murderer. As time went on, however, Gregor could plainly see that Clara was starting to find Hibbert about as welcome as a midge in the bedroom on a warm night.
