About this deal

Next, we have another bourbon cask-aged whiskey at a much milder 80 proof. Again, it’s a blend of grain and malt whiskeys, also of unspecified age.

First up is one of West Cork’s two new U.S. releases, their barrel proof Irish whiskey. It’s an unspecified blend of malt and grain whiskeys, aged in bourbon barrels and bottled at a fiery barrel-strength 124 proof, and sold as a limited release. Buyers should also be particularly careful with newer distilleries that haven’t yet had any of their own whiskey come off the bottling line - as the actual quality of their end-product is still unknown. Tullamore D.E.W is the smoothest Irish whiskey, in my opinion, and it’s always very well priced, which will suit those looking for a good Irish whiskey on a budget. The 7-Year-Old Single Malt is the latest malt expression from West Cork Irish Whiskey. As per the Single Pot Still, it uses exclusively 100% local Irish grain and is matured in Bodega Olorosso casks from the Tolerina Rodriguez bodega in Cadiz, Spain for 4 years then further aged in first fill Bourbon Barrels for 3 years.

It certainly has benefitted is from a cash-flow perspective - obviously this industry is very cash intensive, when you produce something you have to sit on it for three years before you can actually generate anything on it," he said. "But the other thing is that, we have approximately 550-odd people who’ve bought casks from us over the past 18 months, and we very much view those people as almost brand ambassadors."

There was a time when this single pot still Irish whiskey was only available from Dublin grocer Mitchell’s.That has led some to invest at the ground floor - while the liquid is still in a cask - in the hope of making a return when it is eventually mature. We’ve reviewed quite a few Irish whiskey bottlings from West Cork Distillers, but this 8 year old single malt may be its best release yet. Of the four, the single malt definitely stands out—not as better or worse, just as very different in character. It’s a refreshing departure from the rest of the bunch, but also a fairly one-note experience, with a preponderance of bright green fruit and not much else. In Conclusion: One of the unique things about this lesser-spotted drop is that each bottle is individually numbered and signed by the Master Distiller, and sold in an accompanying wooden display case. I had heard from many that Writer’s Tears was ‘one you get used to with time’, but I found their single pot to be very drinkable, despite not being too-fond of whiskeys with long finishes.
