About this deal

At its heart, it is a novel about people who are haunted by traumatic memories and feelings of guilt. Herbert carefully builds the underlying tension of the storyline, interweaving the sub-plots of the developing character relationships, whilst still subtly hinting to the reader an uneasy atmosphere to the whole scenario. Haunted” is also a novel that builds upon the type of psychological horror that allowed Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel “The Haunting Of Hill House” to set the template for the modern ghost story. Widely imitated and hugely influential, his twenty-three novels have sold more than fifty-four million copies worldwide, and have been translated into over thirty languages, including Russian and Chinese.

In this first story, paranormal investigator (and skeptic) David is invited to a crumbling, lonely mansion in the English countryside to stay and investigate ghostly goings on - and to see if he can prove that these are really happening. If you just breeze through this novel without actually stopping to think every now and then, then you’ll probably miss out on some of the things that make it such a masterpiece of horror. Born in London in the forties, James Herbert was art director of an advertising agency before turning to writing fiction in 1975. From the very beginning the reader soon becomes accustomed to Ash's bad habits, cynical view on life and overall downbeat traits, of which followers of Herbert's work will recognise as a somewhat recurring theme within his novels. He is helped (and hindered) by the mysterious incumbent family at the house - and soon finds himself involved in some very strange and scary experiences, the like of which can't be explained by simple logic. For just a few, survival is possible only beneath the wrecked streets - if there is time to avoid the slow-descending poisonous ashes. In 2010, he was made the Grand Master of Horror by the World Horror Convention and was also awarded an OBE by the Queen for services to literature. The film did not stick particularly firmly to the course of Herbert's original tale, but is nevertheless a reasonably enjoyable film. Some books I can come back to later and pick up right where I left off, but I had trouble with this one, especially with time jumping.

Crickley Hall still plays in my mind now and then and I have such a good memory of this, I don't feel like this book will last as long in my mind, but it will stay a while I feel.

Those books were best sellers because many readers (including me) were too horrified to put them down. The sad thing is that up to the last few pages, and I'm really sorry major Herbert fans, what happens along the way may have been earth shattering in the 80s but well, kind of old hat by now. It is based on a 1988 novel of the same name by James Herbert, but makes significant changes to the original story.

Three nights in which David Ash, there to investigate a haunting, will be the victim of horrifying and maleficent games. Some readers have been troubled by the fact that the investigator is willing to believe in some paranormal phenomena but not others; I did not find this a problem. I read The Secret of Crickley Hall this year and I really enjoyed it, so I began this series and I wasn’t disappointed. Part of the Rats trilogy, international bestseller James Herbert's Domain pits man against mutant rats, who are back with a vengeance. He is a man who is troubled ( and driven to alcoholism) by a tragic past and who tries to take a “scientific” attitude towards the paranormal as a way of repressing his own deep-seated fears about it.Haunted was my first James Herbert book and I wouldn't say I disliked it but I didn't love it either. While Robert, Simon and Christina cackle within the flames at his imminent death, Juliet appears and walks through the flames, takes David by the hand and rescues him. All in all, this novel is a masterpiece of horror 🙂 If you want a genuinely terrifying ghost story that can really creep up on you, then this one is well worth reading! Complicating the investigation is Christina's continuous flirtation with David, and his own infatuation with her.
