About this deal

BMB opened my horizon and led to all my later books on stress, resilience, sleep, screens, peer pressure etc but a couple of years ago I realised it needed an upgrade, as the last re-edition dates back to 2013. Understanding the mechanisms behind the strange behaviour makes you a better judge of the utterly bizarre situations in which teenagers find themselves all the time. The goods do not need to be in their original packaging however in a sellable condition, and at your own cost and risk. For example, in the fictional intro to the chapter on emotions, I show Matt referring approvingly to Kurt Cobain’s death by suicide and Matt’s mother being worried by the doodle of nooses in the margin of his essay. My aim was always to unpick and reveal what we know about teenage brains, beginning with neuroscience and fitting it with observed behaviours and an understanding of the societies adolescents live in, explaining in a reassuring way so that young people and the adults who care about them and work with them can make better use of those brains.

One of my GP colleagues who’s also working in an excellent youth service in East London recommended this book to me. Nicola Morgan is an established expert on the teenage brain and adolescent stress, known for her engaging, clear style. If you’re interested in learning about your brain and you actually enjoy science, then this is the book for you. The iphone was released in 2007 and at the time was described as by Microsoft’s chief as “the most expensive phone in the world. This book was first published in 2005 and, I am sure, must have helped a great many young people and their parents and other carers since it first came out. Positively Teenage gives you tools to approach your teenage years with optimism and understanding and to develop real wellbeing for life. But the topic of gender or sex (which are not the same things) has in recent years become one where views are often polarised and we have to be clearer what we mean. All jokes aside being a parent is the BEST and most rewarding job in the world but also the hardest, there are no instructions with this job but so far this book is really helping me to try to understand their teenage years, because I find that even though my boys are now taller than I am , they are still very young and child like in their ways sometimes as they try to adapt to growing up to suit their new adult bodies. I am beyond grateful for the success of Blame My Brain and proud to play my part in helping adolescents and their adults understand that, difficult as adolescence can often be, it is also truly fascinating, powerful and, in the words of the title, amazing.

All of a sudden, one student understood the structure of the sentence we were going through, and could apply his knowledge to any other sentence in the workbook. The strongest part of this piece is the simplification of developmental neuroscience and non-judgmental approach to adolescence. Nicola has also written a number of popular home learning books, including the I Can Learn series, Mega English and the Thomas the Tank Engine Maths series. I was particularly unimpressed with the advice to ‘treat yourself to the cd your parents wouldn’t let you have’. It has been a good read, discussing a variety of subjects like interpreting emotions, controlling facial expressions and finding your own best way to study.Nicola Morgan's entertaining book is written for the teenagers themselves, to explain the phase they are going through, so they can develop tools to cope with the intensity of the teenage years. Blame my brain' has confirmed to me that I was not demented after all or angst-ridden just for the hell of it back when I was a hormonal teenager.

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. The human brain hasn’t changed in that time – but individual brains adapt according to what they do and experience. It is not included in promotions available to our main range products, as stated in our terms of service. I’m obviously no longer a teenager myself, nor a parent of a teenager, but I found it fascinating to be able to think back to my own teenage years and my experiences (and those of some classmates) and finally understand why some people acted the way that they did. PERIOD founder and Harvard College student Nadya Okamoto offers a manifesto on menstruation and why we can no longer silence those who bleed-and how to engage in youth activism.
