About this deal

As camera-makers trim their point-and-shoot lines in the face of encroaching smartphones, one company is keeping the faith and doing what it's done for the past three decades. It wasn’t really even my idea — Kate’s parents gave me a Recesky DIY TLR kit for Xmas which I finally assembled last month. The pieces come neatly laid out in a styrofoam tray and it goes together easily with snaps and screws. Building your own DSLR HD camera is probably not something you're going to be able to do unless you're an electrical engineer.

The camera has a fixed shutter speed of 1/125 and aperture of f11, and there was me shooting in cloudy snowy conditions with low speed expired film. When I put my phone to the viewing hole to take a picture, it blocked more light coming into the box.

We found it best to hold the lens firmly in place with one hand while making adjustments with the other; otherwise it’s all too easy to accidentally unscrew the lens, as this isn’t a piece of precision equipment we’re working with. Thanks for Reading, If you likes what you read please check out my Youtube Channel to follow more of my exploits! Perfect for Do-It-Yourself lovers and those interested in learning, understanding and experiencing how analogue photography works, the Konstruktor F is a fully-functional 35mm SLR camera that you can easily build at home. I hope you enjoyed this article, if you did you can see a bit more of my experience in this video I made for YouTube. The ability to rush things came down to the fact that we were aware at every stage that we were attempting to build a camera that would, eventually, be required to work. The first step is to assemble the lens, which appears simple on the face of it; the optics are all contained in a single part, and you just need to fit that part to the barrel and the mount. There is a formula to calculate its value based on those two measurements, which will be covered in Step 3. Outside of work, he has a personal passion for travel and nature photography, with a devotion to sustainability and environmental causes.

That meant making sure we followed instructions as closely to the letter as we could – to avoid having to re-do certain stages. I also added a thin felt washer under the film rewind knob and painted the inside of the camera in matt black paint -especcially around the back of the mirror area. Fortunately, a metal screwdriver is provided out of the box for the application of the tiny screws provided for assembly, negating the need for glue, which would have made a couple of the build stages impossible to undo and re-do to finesse. Electrical tape can be used for cracks and edges, and felt or foam can be glued on to seal the removable opening.

Taking this resolutely analog approach one step further, or perhaps a step up, is the Lomography Konstrukor. But that's almost expected with most Lomography cameras — the unpredictable results are why you shoot this way, not a reason to be disappointed.

You'll also need a empty spool to serve as a take-up spool for your first roll, so you can use this one. From retro music being revisited in TikTok reels to old movies getting remakes and sequels (I meant the Matrix; there are no Spiderman spoilers in this house), people are increasingly appreciating the vintage, the old, the classic.

The back of the film should be isolated so that the numbers can be read without excess light entering the camera body. The secret is the viewfinder, which is a lot of fun to use; while the ghostly image is a little dim on the ground glass, it's clear enough to enable pinpoint focusing. The reason that I built a curved film plane camera is because the pinhole I bought produced a 150 degree image.
