About this deal

I had reservations about the thought of a man-made tunnel, but no, Enid Blyton describes a natural underground fissure with a few alterations here and there to make it a little more passable.

I think Blyton actually thought she was being clever – in a way that perhaps redeems her just a little, while condemning her society even more. As a bird enthusiast Jack is desperate to visit the Isle of Gloom, where he thinks he’s seen the extinct Great Auk, so the boys practice sailing Bill’s boat, and then secretly borrow Jo-Jo’s to sail to the island. Of course, after a while you find out it's just Kiki the parrot, sitting on a branch above, but by then I think a reader would be suitably drawn in. I guess when you're young, reading these books for the first time, the baddies do come across as mean and dangerous. There are literally thousands of birds there, and Jack swears he caught sight of a Great Auk, thought to be extinct. He’s given adjectives, too, which by themselves are not so terrible yet which form a clear and familiar pattern: the sulky black man, the sullen black man, the angry black man. Until they begin to realize that something very sinister is taking place on the mysterious Isle of Gloom – where a dangerous adventure awaits them in the abandoned copper mines and secret tunnels beneath the sea.

Jack and Lucy-Ann turn up again and Philip asks her if the Trents can come to stay at Craggy Tops (an ambush if ever I saw one) and she says she’ll telephone Aunt Polly to ask. My copy arrived quite quickly but I was disappointed that the cover is not as shown - it is a more modern cover with more modern children on it - some may prefer this, but I wanted the cover shown, which is a drawing of children rather than a photograph of what appear to be teenagers - my little boy would not relate to that cover as much as the drawing of children. Craggy-Tops overlooks the mysterious Isle of Gloom — an island shrouded in mist and spray, and surrounded by a reef of rocks. Nice and clean pages but slightly yellow on the outer edges,a couple of creases and light shelf wear on the edges of the pages, small pencil marks impressions inside the first blank page of the book. But don’t worry, it’s not long before the children have found a nice man who gives them presents and plays with them and demands that they keep all this their little secret and never tell their parents (and/or neglectful relatives) about them.

Jack and Kiki find themselves following the others, who are kidnapped and taken to the strange country of Tauri Hessia; but he finds help with a circus. Rhys-Davies continues to play the Bond villain, explaining his entire operation and plans to Bill because it won’t matter, he’s going to die.Like her brother, she has a tuft of hair standing up atop her head, but she shares neither his gift in attracting, nor his love for, animals, especially the small creeping types (mice, insects, snakes etc. The Island of Adventure needs to be re-released, preferably a full HD remastered version, so that everyone can come to love the many colourful catchphrases from this fantastic film: "I hate mackerel pie", "She flew in through the window? According to the first book, The Island of Adventure, Philip guesses Jack is "about fourteen" and believes himself to be a little younger. Following his first adventure, Jack nearly always carries a rope and his field glasses, among other things, as basic equipment. a path under the sea-bed itself - there are no end to the adventures that the four children have, Then there is Kiki, the parrot, whose ridiculous chatter delights the children and who shares in their amazing adventures.
