About this deal

Their venture into whisky-making was not a success and by 1848 the bank was in control. For the next three decades Talisker stumbled through a series of other owners who found it hard to keep afloat a distillery which is remote even by 21st century standards. It was a difficult journey, often made in horrendous weather conditions and loss of life was not uncommon… Palate: Syrupy body. Very hot, at first, but resolves slowly into heavy notes of rhubarb, smoked salt, earthy peat, and caramel malt. The port is more readily detectable here, with light red fruits and a slight tartness. In terms of value, it’s a little difficult to put my finger on it. This is largely because it’s not easily available in the USA. In France, its price varies between 30€ and 50€ depending on whether you buy it online or in a physical shop. Nose: Loads of sweet, honeyed smoke (smoked ham), oranges (marmalade), a hint of berries, fresh sea air - delicious! That smoke is so sweet and rich. With time in the glass, a toffee note emerges. I could nose this all day. Definitely appeals to me. Talisker 1984/2021 (51.9%, OB, Prima & Ultima Third Release, hogsheads and sherry butt, 2022) - 210622 When the NAS-hype arrived a couple of years ago, Talisker was one of the first to launch one next to their classic 10 year old. Now, that does not neccessarily have to be a bad thing. The Talisker Storm or the 57° North were both quite excellent in my book (I have yet to try the Dark Storm and the Skye). This Port Ruighe (say ‘port-reeh’), from 2013, was finished on port casks. Alternatively, you could consider a Davidoff Winston Churchill The Late Hour or even a Year of the Rat as pictured here. The Talisker Port Ruighe (pronounced as Port Tree) has been on the market for about 7 years now, but today is actually the first time I will taste it. I’m not much of a fan of Port finishes, so maybe this is why I didn’t really have this single malt on my radar. However, a few weeks ago I spotted this bottle in my father’s whisky cabinet, so I secretly stole a sample so that I could try it and of course, review it.

Talisker 12 yo (45.8%, OB for Friends of Classic Malts, European Oak, 21500 bottles, 2007) - 121012

The long finish becomes very smoky, dark and sweet with some earthy notes at the death. Outstanding. With its smoky profile, it’s no surprise that I’ll be recommending food pairings such as kippers and smoked salmon. I realise that this may be a bit strange if you don’t usually enjoy whisky with a meal. However, I absolutely love bringing these two native products together in a single experience. Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”). Finish: Drying and gets a bit dusty with wet oak, but some cocoa notes save it. Marinated raisins, prunes, dried mud and chocolate shavings. Talisker Distillery Co. merges with Dailuaine-Glenlivet Distillers and Imperial Distillers to form Dailuaine-Talisker Distillers Co.

The sea trade was crucial to the rise in the global popularity of Portuguese wine. In the late 18th century, the relationship between England and France was a fraught one. Colbert, first minister of Louis XIV set out to restrict the import of English goods into France. In retaliation, Charles II of England banned French wines. In terms of its appropriate use for different occasions, this is a wonderfully versatile whisky. Indeed, it’s something that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed sipping alone on a quiet evening with a cigar. However, it’s an excellent choice for special events or after a big dinner with friends.

Comment: A departure for Talisker and as someone who generally dislikes red wine finishes this was much more drinkable than I expected.
