Our only real complaint with the E-P7 is the LCD screen, which displays certain hues –especially skintones –far too hot. However, for a travel camera it has one major downside – in bright light, it’s much harder to compose your images via the screen, so at times it really is missed.
This could be because the former two markets are the most receptive to travel-friendly mirrorless cameras, or it could be a case of testing the waters before releasing the camera to a wider audience. The result is the best non-OM-D camera we've seen since the PEN-F, as well as one of the best travel cameras, best cameras for street photography, best cameras for beginners and even best vlogging cameras for quick and clean content creation. The E-P7 features the same new autofocus system as the E-M10 Mark IV –it's still a contrast-based AF system, but is night and day better than that of the PEN-F or any of the preceding E-PL cameras. For example, I wanted to adjust the microphone settings to switch on a wind filter, and instead of this being an option that I could easily find (most cameras list this separately somewhere), this option was inside the mic options, which includes (On, on with wind filter, and off).As a travel-orientated camera, it’s also likely that you’ll primarily be shooting in good light, which makes its low-light credentials less of an issue. Video quality is good, and although it’s probably not going to attract the attention of dedicated vloggers, those who want to shoot the odd video clip will find it does a good job. Worse, if you’re in iAuto mode, you’ve got to switch to one of the PASM modes to access the Live control or SCP. You’ll find an ISO range of ISO200 to ISO25600 available, with an additional LOW ISO speed of ISO100 available, albeit with a reduced dynamic range when using the lowest setting.
In Movie Mode the PEN E-PL7’s Live control menu allows you to change a range of settings independently of the same settings in stills shooting modes. A new control dial has been added, improving the handling and the E-PL7 also adds built-in Wifi for transferring photos to your phone and remote control of the camera. Indeed, the improved AF is particularly noticeable when recording video; gone is the hunting and pulsing of Olympus' older contrast AF system, with much more honest autofocus that makes this a realistic proposition for straightforward content creation and filming vlogs up to 4K 30p.It’s feasible to pop this in a jacket pocket, and it certainly won’t take up too much room in a small bag. A quick push of the 'OK' button on the back of the camera reveals a quick menu with a range of oft-used options to scroll through and quickly make changes, without requiring a deep delve into the more extensive main menu. The benefit of the Olympus approach is enjoying stabilization with any lens you attach, whereas on a Panasonic body you’ll only have stabilization on lenses which support it. Olympus is generally regarded to have the best stabilisation system around and while the E-P7 doesn’t have quite as an impressive system as the company’s top-end cameras, it’s still claimed to offer a shutter speed compensation factor of 4.
