About this deal

In February 2008, Polaroid (by then under the control of Thomas J. Petters of Petters Group Worldwide) announced it would cease production of all instant film; the company shut down three factories and laid off 450 workers. [9] Sales of chemical film by all makers have dropped by at least 25% per year since 2000, [ citation needed] but a new birth of interest around Fujifilm and the Impossible Project films fulfilled demand in the market. Not suitable for: Vintage Polaroid 600 cameras, Modern i-Type Polaroid cameras (Polaroid Now, Polaroid Now+, Polaroid OneStep2, Polaroid OneStep+), Polaroid Go, Polaroid Lab The off-center viewfinder can also make light flares an issue when shooting towards the sun. What might seem well-composed can actually have direct sunlight hitting the lens.

The Polaroid I-2 is capable of producing subtle, vintage-style prints, but results were less consistent than from Instax cameras we’ve tested, and many stills shot on auto were overexposed. Shutter speed and aperture controls mean experienced photographers have more flexibility to find a better balance, although you’ll need to spend a lot on film to learn what works. Its price will put off amateurs, but if you want an advanced instant camera that’s creatively engaging, the I-2 is a solid choice. Push the lens barrel release and it extrudes using a spring mechanism, with the built-in flash activating automatically.

The textured finish gives it retro appeal and also makes it easier to get a firm grip, which is good as the Instax 40 is slightly heavier than its cheaper sibling. While it feels like a solid unit, the Instax 40 has the same sort of pull-out lens, which still feels a little flimsy, especially when the lens is pulled out fully to activate selfie mode. Suitable for: Modern i-Type Polaroid cameras ( Polaroid Now, Polaroid Now+, Polaroid OneStep2, Polaroid OneStep+), Polaroid Lab A built-in LED ring flash helps you take pleasing portraits, the mirrored lens barrel is purpose-built for selfies, and focusing is automatic, making this a great party camera. That said, we found in testing that it can be sluggish to start up, and printing a picture takes around 10 seconds – much slower than our current favorite, the Fuji Instax Mini 12. The credit card-sized prints it produces are detailed though, with colors resembling a traditional 35mm photo. The Polaroid SX-70 is another vintage model, and was the world's first instant SLR camera. Like Polaroid 600s, they are no longer manufactured –though they are still hugely popular on the second-hand market, and Polaroid itself even sells refurbished bodies (as do other refurb specialists). The newest instant format from Fujifilm, introduced in 2018, Instax Square film is larger than Mini and carries a 1:1 aspect ratio more like the classic shape of Polaroid film. It is available in color and monochrome, with a selection of colored and patterned frame options.

But what if you've got an honest-to-goodness Polaroid camera? The company has been reborn in the 21st century—it's gone through some name changes over the years, from the Impossible Project to Polaroid Originals, but today it's just called Polaroid. Although you can argue that is the point, as for snapping and printing Instax Mini prints, it is perfect. Like other hybrid cameras, the fun factor is the main selling point, something to be passed around at parties for making prints, and for that, the Leica Sofort 2 is a class act.
