About this deal

Tizen is divided into four (technically five) sections: Search, Ambient, Gaming, Media and Menu. Ambient is where you can turn the screen into an art installation with a selection of prints (you’ll also have to contend with the dreaded NFTs). The Gaming Hub features cloud services such as Utomik and Xbox Game Pass, Samsung TVs are the only TVs you’ll find that app on. Media features streaming apps along with curated content from the likes of iPlayer, and Menu is where you’ll find options to tweak picture, sound, etc.

As what Samsung calls a Neo QLED TV, the QN90B fuses quantum dots and Mini LEDs into a display technology (“Quantum LEDs”) the company claims results in richer colors and higher contrast. We tested this by using an X-Rite i1 Pro spectrophotometer, a SpectraCal VideoForge Pro pattern generator, and Portrait Displays’ Calman calibration software. With an HDR signal, the QN90B shows a peak brightness of 612.132cd/m

Simple Style, and a Solar Remote

When it comes to gaming the QN90B is not as all-consuming as the LG C2’s feature set but you’re still getting a tremendous number of features whether you’re a console or PC gamer. I measured latency at 10.1ms – faster than the LG C2 (13.1ms) – and with Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) that can drop down to neglible amounts. The QN90B is a second gen Neo QLED Mini LED TV, and it’s another exceptionally bright effort that boasts wide-ranging colours. I do think, however, there’s a case to be made that too much brightness is not always a great thing.

So it gives the appearance of the extra lighting precision that people want from having more dimming zones, and as we’ve already seen in our Samsung QN95B review, it’s highly effective. Your requirements will have to be fairly specific for the QN90B to make a compelling case over the QN85B if there's a significant price save – unless the smaller screen size availability is a factor (and, let’s face it, the 43-inch QN90B seems to be more like a QN80B based on its specs anyway). Well, all except the 43-inch QN90B, anyway – the smallest screen has to make do with regular ‘wide viewing angle’. And the 43-inch QN90B goes without the ‘anti-reflection’ screen technology. Its biggest audio issue, though, is the way its sound struggles to project forward, leaving film and TV audio mixes sounding rather swallowed and as if everything is happening somewhere behind the screen. Not surprisingly this can leave you feeling rather distanced from what you’re watching. VerdictThe QN90B Tizen interface shifts to a full-screen presentation from the much more economical look of the QN90A, which only takes over around a third of the screen. The QN90A’s relatively minimal approach enables you to keep watching TV for the whole time you’re browsing the smart menus, whereas the new Tizen interface only lets you keep watching (in a fairly small box) what was on when you hit the Home menu button until you navigate away to a different area of the menus.

Since 1982, PCMag has tested and rated thousands of products to help you make better buying decisions. See how we test. All of the QE50QN90B’s high-end picture features are marshalled by the latest version of Samsung’s Neo Quantum 4K video processor, complete with improved upscaling and the accumulated knowledge of numerous neural networks that have been busy crunching through countless image types in Samsung’s labs to develop a vast database of picture optimisation shortcuts. Both the QN90B (pictured here during our early testing with it) and the QN85B feature the deep contrast of mini-LED tech. (Image credit: Future / Al Griffin)

This small TV is loaded with big capabilities

Well, no – not quite. The QN85B and QN90B are more similar than they are different, but there are worthwhile divergences. You just have to look (quite hard) for them. The only notable app absentee is Freeview Play – though Samsung does support the separate catch up apps of all of the key UK terrestrial broadcasters.
