This ‘complete dome of sound’ Atmos point does raise the spectre of the Q930B’s missing rear left and rear right channels compared with the Q990B. However, while these extra channels do increase the general presence of the rear speakers in the Q990B’s overall sound balance, the Q930B manages to disperse its forward side-channel sounds well enough from the main soundbar not to leave you feeling (unless you have a really huge room) as if there’s a glaring ‘gap’ in the Dolby Atmos sound dome. With the arrival of its QN900A range, Samsung has essentially stepped into a new television category, giving its already high-end 8K displays a rather significant Mini LED upgrade. Because of this, Samsung's Neo QLED 8K lineup doesn't come cheap. This is perhaps a little disappointing in the sense that it suggests Samsung hasn’t any significant internal hardware changes since 2020. However, in pure form factor terms, we were actually fans of the Q800T’s design. So naturally we’re fans of the identical Q800A too.

One of the big selling points of any 8K TV is how well it handles upscaling. and thankfully the QN900A does a great job of making content look crystal-clear without any artificial smoothing. Take the above image of Alita as an example – it's clean and sharp, yet you can still make out its fine, film-like grain. Next, while bass is hugely potent from the Q930B’s subwoofer, its rumbles don’t latch onto the bottom end of the main soundbar quite as effectively as those of the Q990B’s sub, leaving it very occasionally drawing a little too much attention to itself when the going suddenly gets really, really deep. Both of the Samsung HW-Q900 and HW-Q950A have a discrete center channel and their center sound performance is equally great. At max Volume, they both can get around 97 dB SPL, which means it is fairly loud. Additionally, frequency response of their center speaker is also fairly balanced, particularly in mid range. This makes them can produce clear and accurate dialogue with detail. Just like their stereo sound, the distortion performance of their center sound is also equally great. Not just in normal listening volume, their sound is also heard clearly with almost no distortion at max volume, so don’t need to worry to set them at max volume when they are used in a large room or crowded party. When used for listening to music, their performance is also equally great overall. They have Auto EQ feature that can help to make their sound profile is neutral, well balanced that certainly is good for most genres of music. That is not only that, they both also have a lot of sound enhancement feature, allowing you to customize and maximize sound reproduction according to your taste. You can individually use Presets EQ or Graphic EQ, Bass Adjustment, Treble Adjustment, Surround Adjustment, Woofer Adjustment, etc. Additionally, their excellent stereo frequency response also makes stereo sound of the music will be more pronounced. And if you have a large room or have a crowded party, you don’t need to worry since they both can get very loud.

Samsung has put its 2022 ‘step down’ soundbar on a whole other level to anything we’ve seen in the same slot before The speakers of two Samsung TVs we used the Q800A with, a 65QN95A and a 75Q900A, blended in with the power and tone of the soundbar surprisingly well overall. There’s a slight reduction in mid-range meatiness in Q Symphony mode compared with using the soundbar alone, and dialogue sounds a touch thinner. The HW-Q900A soundbar has excellent stereo performance. With standard presets, it has a neutral sound profile suitable for listening to a variety of audio content. Nevertheless, the low frequencies do not reach the deep ones a little. Therefore, heavy bass music sounds truncated. But the Q900A soundbar has a graphic equalizer, as well as separate bass and treble settings to help customize its sound. Auto EQ Hard impact sounds hit with a little more unwanted politeness (rather than lovable brutality) than they do on the Q990B, and while the balance of sound is generally excellent, occasionally really bright trebles can sound a little too prominent. Seemingly because the smaller main soundbar doesn’t have quite as much counterpointing low-end grunt as the Q990B’s.The Q800A is not just about ‘big moments’, though. It’s also sensitive and sophisticated enough in the way it projects its sound to ensure that no detail goes missing in even the densest mixes – no matter how subtle or quiet it might be.
