Fungus Gnats – What Works And What Doesn’t How To Get Rid Of Fungus Gnats – What Works And What Doesn’t

When bringing any new houseplant home, keep it in a different room from your other plants for at least a few weeks while ascertaining if it conceals unwelcome visitors. Once you’ve spotted insects on a plant, remove that container a safe distance away from your other plants. Several natural enemies help to manage fungus gnat populations in outdoor systems, such as landscapes and gardens, and indoors in greenhouses and conservatories, including the predatory hunter flies, Coenosia spp. These flies catch and consume adult fungus gnats in mid-air, and prey on fungus gnat larvae in soil while developing as larvae themselves. Conserve these and other natural enemies by avoiding broad-spectrum insecticide applications. Table 1. Commercially Available Biological Pesticides and Natural Enemies for Controlling Fungus Gnat Larvae. Always use sterilized potting soil to pot plants. Additionally, keep extra soil inside of a closed container after opening its bag, and don’t mix compost into your potting soil unless it’s been completely finished and sterilized.I sometimes use Bonide Systemic Houseplant Insecticide and it is very effective to kill fungus gnat larvae. You simply apply it to the potting mix as directed on the label and water it in. See the Pest Note: Soil Solarization for details. Store pasteurized potting soil off the ground and in closed containers to prevent it from becoming infested before use. Trapping

If you are opposed to harsher treatments, one excellent product to use is Mosquito Bits. Mosquito bits are basically corn cob granules which are coated in BTI bacteria (Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis). For the older, hardier, more established plants we have never really seen any damage caused by the gnats. But plants such as herbs, impatiens, hoyas, and vegetable seedlings seem to really suffer once the fungus gnat larvae take hold in the soil. Seedlings fail to thrive. Other plants drop leaves or succumb to fungal infections. Apparently the larvae are capable of carrying pathogens that can cause real damage to vulnerable plants. In the open garden fungus gnats are not a problem and part of a well balanced biodiverse garden ecosystem Before buying the product, research if it is made with harsh chemicals, pesticides, or insecticides. If yes, this product won’t be safe for you to use because these products can spread toxins and chemicals in the environment, which can be dangerous for you, your children and pets, and plants. EfficacyFungus gnats are tiny flying bugs belonging to a few insect families (namely Sciaridae, aka dark-winged fungus gnats). They eat plant matter, mulch, compost, and—true to their name—fungus. All of these materials can be found outdoors, but these dietary needs can be found even more reliably in potting soil for houseplants. Their attraction to potting mix’s warmth and moisture makes fungus gnats particularly problematic indoor pests. Repeat this pyrethrin fungus gnat treatment until all signs of infestation, including flying adults and larvae and eggs in the soil, disappear. This may take some time, especially if several houseplants are in quarantine for these pests. To get rid of fungus gnats faster, consider using this method in addition to the above alternatives. STEP 4: Replace the top layer of soil.

Dreistadt, S. H. rev. 1986. Fungus Gnats and March Flies. Oakland: Univ. Calif. Div. Agric. Nat. Res. Publ. 7051. If you prefer to avoid applying insecticides of any kind to your plants, luring gnats away from them with a mixture of apple cider vinegar and dish soap is likely the best way to kill them. SUPPLIES The first symptom of damage that you’ll notice is wilting and a general decline in the health of the plant. Read on to find out how to kill fungus gnats with simple DIY remedies. How to Control Fungus Gnats For information on managing fungus gnats in commercial flower, nursery or greenhouse operations, see the UC IPM Pest Management Guidelines: Floriculture and Ornamental Nurseries and the book Integrated Pest Management for Floriculture and Nurseries. Gnats and flies are attracted to plants and fruits, and they find their way into your house through windows. Nobody wants gnats or mosquitoes in their house. They can contaminate your fruits too. So, to get rid of them, you should have a gnat trap to catch and/or kill them! They should be killed or trapped before they breed, as that can create bigger problems for you and your family. There are two types of traps: Electronic zappersAlso, the adult gnats would just congregate near the drainage holes of planters (probably laying eggs there too) for the few plants in larger planters that had a drier surface soil. Replacing The Top 3 Inches Of Soil Fungus gnat larvae live in the soil and eat the root material. They look like thin white maggots. Fungus gnat flies lay eggs which hatch into larvae, see images below. Because fungus gnats thrive in moist conditions, especially where there is an abundance of decaying vegetation and fungi, avoid overwatering and provide good drainage. Allow the surface of container soil to dry between waterings. Clean up standing water, and eliminate any plumbing or irrigation system leaks. Moist and decomposing grass clippings, compost, organic fertilizers, and mulches are also favorite breeding spots. Avoid using incompletely-composted organic matter in potting media unless it is pasteurized first, because it will often be infested with fungus gnats. Improve the drainage of the potting mix (e.g., increase the proportion of perlite or sand in the mix). Minimize organic debris around buildings and crops. Avoid fertilizing with excessive amounts of manure, blood meal, or similar organic materials. Screen and caulk leaky windows and doors to help prevent pests from coming indoors.
