Yes, there’s a slight flimsiness to the sound if you take a critical ear to it—but it’s not the kind of thing you notice during your workout. Given the fact these headphones are designed to work so well with products in the Apple ecosystem, it won’t be a surprise if future models are Lightning-connected instead. Another handy little feature of the Powerbeats Pro is that there are music/call controls and volume controls on both buds. For normal use, that might not be a huge boon but during workouts it's fantastic. No need to remember which bud to reach for to turn the music up, or skip your playlist's token ballad. One of the most impressive things about the PowerBeats 3 is the battery life on offer, with it being nothing short of excellent. Beats by Dr. Dre Solo Pro is a line that features an Active Noise Cancelling. This together with an advanced acoustic platform will ensure that you'll have the best sound experience no matter the situation is. Meanwhile, its Transparency Mode can naturally filter more ambient and environmental noise so that you'll be able to stay aware of your surroundings. Sharing is compatible with Beats Fit Pro, Beats Flex, Solo Pro, Powerbeats Pro, Powerbeats, Solo3 Wireless, Powerbeats3 Wireless, Beats Studio3 Wireless, BeatsX, AirPods (1st generation or later), AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max. They're not totally wire-free like the Powerbeats Pro or AirPods Pro and they're missing active noise cancellation and noise reduction technology – which means you probably won't want to bring them on long flights or on your busy commute.

That said, however, they are—in our opinion—Apple’s best workout earbuds to date thanks to small additions like the earhooks, pressure-reducing micro-laser barometric venting hole, their longer battery life and superior sound quality. Inside the box you’ll also find a small Lightning to USB Cable plus a soft carrying case and directions for the earbuds, though setup is as simple as holding them near an iOS device or pairing them via the power button to an Android device. In terms of battery longevity, we used the PowerBeats 3 for four to five days on average before needing to charge them again, and that’s with both regular runs and general commuting use. Ultimately, while the Beats Powerbeats Pro impressed us, they’re simply not the best true wireless earbuds on the market.

Detail is also good from the PowerBeats 3, with lots of pleasing little touches apparent in your favorite songs. It also helps that the Pro buds are extremely comfortable, and not just in terms of how they fit in and around the ear, but also in terms of how they feel when you’re listening to music. The fit is pretty good, and for people with more ‘enclosed’ ears likely almost perfect. Some might struggle to get a good seal with the tips, thanks to the hooks holding the buds at a slightly wider angle, but overall the PowerBeats are comfortable to wear. The design of the PowerBeats 3 doesn’t really deviate too much from the previous iterations, with the buds housed on long plastic oblongs, connecting to your ears with rubberiszd hooks – and of course, the obvious Beats logo on the side for the cachet owning such a brand confers for some.

The PowerBeats 3 are well-made, long-lasting and with good sound quality, which is a pleasing trio of merit for fitness headphones. Testing conducted by Apple in March 2019 using pre-production Powerbeats Pro units and Powerbeats3 Wireless units and software paired with iPhone XS units and pre-release software. Testing consisted of transferring phone call audio from iPhone to Powerbeats Pro and Powerbeats3 Wireless. Performance depends on device settings, environment and many factors. To that end, buy these earbuds if you’re an Apple-loving gym-goer who can appreciate better-sounding music and features like hands-free Hey Siri, and don’t mind paying a bit more for those things.
