Although it doesn’t have a built-in USB plug, relying on a cable instead, there is software on board. If you have the presence of mind and timing to set it up, you can also make neat slow-motion videos – though for reasons that are difficult to explain here 1, you'll have to do it from afar. This is essentially a single-setting video gain option, which does boost brightness, but at the expense of washing out the colour and introducing a grainy quality to the image due to sensor noise. We found the Toshiba Camileo X-Sports to be a good alternative to the GoPro Hero3, and one that provides good performance and specifications combined with generous mounts and accessories.

If you don’t have the budget for a GoPro Hero3 and don’t mind sacrificing a little image quality, the Toshiba Camileo X-Sports is a good alternative. There is a 4x digital zoom available, but even that only works when you’re not in 1080p mode, presumably because it requires surplus pixels on the sensor which aren’t available at this resolution. The Camileo had some obvious difficulty with video in bright sunlight; the camera was prone to blowouts, especially on white guys' pates or ironic tees. Annoyingly, though, we found the X-Sports’ buttons difficult to operate when it’s in the case, and required a firm and forceful press for something to happen.Still-image resolution drops to 8Mp and video framerate falls to 30fps in this mode, but it seems a good compromise. A 5-megapixel CMOS sensor captures the video, and despite Toshiba being very secretive about its physical size, it measures 1/2. The 16x telephoto seems impressive at first glance, but it’s still digital so noticeably pixellates the image when you zoom in.

The biggest weakness is the sound from the internal microphone, and there are no provisions for using an external one, which rules the P20 out for anyone wanting to add a more professional touch to their home movies. For example, image stabiliation and motion detection use an icon of a hand and a person, but both are leaving trails so you have to think twice about which is which.
If the screen proves difficult to see, or is in an awkward position, there's always the option of using a smartphone to view the image. They're not as good as a dedicated 8-megapixel digital camera would be, but they're serviceable in a pinch. The Camileo comes with a generous assortment of mounting options so that you can attach it to vented helmets, bikes and surfboards, as well as curved and flat surfaces. A second button lets you switch quality modes, and a final button enables backlight compensation, always a handy setting to have readily available. Several hardware perks, such as HDMI-out, a flip-out display, removable battery, zoom controls, LED light and a macro switch.
