About this deal

Alongside the insects and cut flowers on the ledge are pieces of jewellery and loose diamonds. The vast majority of diamonds imported into Europe during the 17th century, especially into the Low Countries, came from India. It was once thought that this painting may have been commissioned by a diamond merchant, but it is more likely that the precious stones are there simply to dazzle the viewer. When speaking about another of his works, Brueghel said to a patron, “under the flowers I have painted a jewel with coins, and with rare objects from the sea. It is up to you to judge whether or not flowers surpass gold and jewels.”

Soil is poor. Daffodils don't require rich soil, but they do need some nutrition. Topdressing with a handful of bulb fertilizer in the fall may help prompt flowering the following spring. Be careful, though, as too much fertilizer can damage daffodil bulbs.Bulbocodium daffodils: Also known as hoop-petticoat daffodils, these flowers have a single petal surrounding a large, funnel-shaped cup.

The flower of ‘Altruist’ has a very distinctive small, dark orange cup surrounded by apricot-yellow, overlapping petals, standing on 45cm tall stems. The flowers do well in a vase and blend well with yellow daffodils in a mixed display. The bulbs naturalise well, flowering reliably year after year and increasing in number. Daffodils are often used in formal bedding displays, especially in parks and recreation areas. Try them with primula, anemone, crocus, hyacinth, winter flowering heathers and Iris reticulata. The best soils for daffodils are well-drained, fertile loams with plenty of organic matter. The ideal pH is around 7 to 6.5, though they will tolerate a few units either way. Before planting, poor sandy or clay soils should be cultivated to a depth of two spades, with well-rotted manure or garden compost incorporated into the lower spit. Alternatively, heavier clay soils can be improved by raising the bed and incorporating plenty of sharp sand or grit.A Stoneware Vase of Flowers by Jan Brueghel the Elder, c1607-1608.
