About this deal

Robot Roz undertakes an unusual ocean journey to save her adopted island home in this third series entry. This new episode of "Dog Man" put a big smile on my face and the "Friendly Friends" club song in my head (to the tune of "Jingle Bells"). Now you have those two words in a loop in your head, right? You're welcome. Dav Pilkey is so smart. His plots and humor work on two levels seamlessly. There are bits of human nature throughout that we can relate to at any age. It includes themes relating to personal rehabilitation, fake news, persistence, and a chapter entitled "Cat Cell Culture." And I'm just scratching the surface. The flying submarine has a pie-making machine in the kitchen and a Size-O-Tron with nine settings from "Okay, now you're just being silly" to "Supa Doopa Big. Silly and smart! I feel like while we absolutely love Captain Underpants in my family, that Dog Man is just better. Captain Underpants got confusing and less funny, but Dog Man continues to get funnier with each book while also being completely wholesome and incorporating some hilarious inside jokes for the parents. All this comes amidst a general slowdown for comics and graphic novel sales earlier this year. According to a February Bookscan report, found in Publishing Perspectives, although GN sales remain strong, they slowed down in the first six weeks of 2023, down 13% from 2022, with juvenile comics declining for the first time in more than a decade.

EXCLUSIVE MINI-COMIC by DAV PILKEY! - Scholastic

Usually I find the more recent dog man books to have a LOT less humour in then the old ones, mainly focusing on morals and values. But really, it’s a literal comic about a man who’s a dog, why do we need all that? Pilkey does it again with another insightful read. He seems to have moved on from some of the earlier potty humor, but still offers valuable cultural insight and wisdom weaved into these very silly graphic novels. Wally’s World is just one of a number of special Pilkey moments this month leading up to the March 28 release of Twenty Thousand Fleas; the month started with a new edition of The Adventures of Captain Underpants— officially, the “25½ Anniversary Edition,” because timing — that features an all-new strip teaming Captain Underpants and Dog Man. (This strip will also appear in the Dog Man and the League of Misfits Free Comic Book Day release.)

Popverse is owned by Gamer Network Limited, a ReedPop company and subsidiary of Reed Exhibitions Limited. I love this series more than I can express. It’s been too long since we got a new Dog Man book and this story really delivered! It was worth the wait. The humor is top notch as usual and I loved the message in the end. There are at least 3 or 4 different storylines that all cleverly intersect and come together. There are a lot of laugh-out-loud moments and silly fun. There are also quite a few tender moments too. This book has it all. (And honestly, while it’s really really silly, I don’t get why so many people have issues with it. It’s really clever and has a lot of thought and planning to make it all work.) Keep your eyes peeled on Popverse for more Dog Man over the next few weeks. While all this is going on, a villain named Piggy is trying to escape from the Mini Jail where he and some of his gang members have been hiding. When the jail breaks open, they make their escape. The problem is that Piggy is intent on continuing his villainous ways as a member of the group called Fleas while the rest of his group has formed a new organization – the Friendly Friends. Piggy becomes annoyed with their constant singing and cheerfulness. They join an inventor named Uncle Larry who has built an incredible headquarters for the Friendly Friends. He also has a flying submarine. Piggy is thrilled to try out all the gadgets, still with an eye toward villainy.I have no regrets buying this book after my son saw it at Target and literally ran to the display with excitement. That is the reading life I want for him. As the novel comes to a close, everyone joins in to help Petey rebuild his lab. He discovers that he has friends willing to help despite his past mistakes. Petey has tried to make Li'l Petey and Molly understand the necessity of living life to the fullest, but they do not seem to get the message until Sarah says it. After all, it always sounds better the way Sarah says it.
