About this deal

but as a fan of board games I felt like the theme could be put to the side and I could just enjoy the mechanics of Flamme Rouge. TIP: Over time your deck will fill up with these cards that only give two movement, try to avoid getting them. The cards not selected are placed face up at the bottom of the corresponding deck and when reached these are shuffled and form a new deck.

Flamme Rouge is a fast-paced, tactical bicycle racing game where each player controls a team of two riders: a Rouleur and a Sprinteur.

That’s it, a quick set up and easy to follow rules makes this game easy to learn and it’s one that I enjoyed playing. The more fatigue you suffer, the more of these cards are added to your deck, the more likely it is you’ll then draw them into your hand and have your speed options limited in the home stretch. This card will be placed into your deck and with its low movement value will limit your movement later in the game.

The rulebook has a selection for different game lengths and due to its nature it allows players to design their own. The former is designed to chug along at a constant pace, happy to roll with the main pack, while the latter is able to employ massive bursts of speed to race out in front. Each player chooses a colour and takes a pair of bike and rider miniatures, the player board, and the set of energy cards in that colour. As a more strategic alternative to a roll and move game, Flamme Rouge is all about pacing your team and knowing when to gamble on a big card play. While unable to actually use the words, since it doesn’t have the license, Flamme Rouge—a “Red Flag”, waved when a race is one kilometre from the finish—is based on early Tour De France contests, and while playing out as a very simple board game, actually manages to replicate many of the key factors and strategies of such a race.

An expansion is available, Flamme Rouge: Peloton, that increases the player count to six teams as well as new track sections. Flamme Rouge is a game I hope to get to the table often as its very fun and easy to teach with added depth that can be included if needed. I wasn’t interested in the theme of this game at all when first asked to play, but what helped link a disinterested gamer to a fun-as-hell experience was Flamme Rouge’s art, a bright and cheery caricature of early 20th-century design that helps both set the tone and keep things lighthearted. The game has a built-in rubber-banding system that imposes stamina penalties on racers breaking away from the head of the pack, while at the same time providing small slip-streaming benefits to those nestled in behind them. Mountain Descents – If you start on a descent square (marked in blue) then the rider will move a minimum of five, even if you play a lower number.Complicating things a little more are the presence of hills, which can break a race’s pacing wide open. All of this means that, on your turn, you’ll be considering what your opponents are going to do and then choosing a card to help you either get in position for the hill or allow you to slipstream. The question now is how well does it hold up to the designer’s most recent racing game, Heat: Pedal to the Metal. So when I came to pick up my cards to shuffle them, I would invariably try to pick up the ‘extra’ card too.

The way this fatigue is handled is probably the most important part of Flamme Rouge’s design; the game is built around you having a deck of cards, from which you draw a small hand giving you some speed options every turn that tend to range from 4-8 grid spaces. It’s not terrible at 2 or 3 but it’s not great either, so go into this thinking it’s a 4-player game to get the best out of it. Flamme Rouge is a fast-paced, tactical bicycle racing game where each player controls a team of two riders: a Rouleur and a Sprinteur. If you primarily play at 4 players, and you’re looking for a light racing game that’s easy to learn but still has some good tactics and strategy, then Flamme Rouge is a game to consider. Racers heading up a hill will find their speed options limited and slip-streaming disabled, but anyone getting over the top and moving downhill first will find that they can quickly pick up speed and make a break for it.Watching where the other riders are and what cards they have used is a great way to plan your next moves. You know you’ve still got three 5s in your sprinteur’s deck so you’ve got a good chance of getting one. Breaking off for an early lead may look cool, but will probably cripple you towards the end of the race, but hanging back too long can also doom you if you leave your run too late.
