The base has remained the same in all versions of the game, so if you already own the base you can buy the game digitally or buy a cheaper set that features the game disc and characters. If you buy the software on its own (digitally or via disc) you won’t be able to play the main game without the playset piece or a character toy. Disney Infinity 4.0 would have followed the set up of the series previous installments. However, two new features were to be introduced in 4.0 that would have changed the way the game worked; a Toy Box Story Mode (see below) and the long-awaited update of all 1.0 and 2.0 playable characters' skill trees and move sets to be updated with the 3.0 mechanics.

Like Skylanders, Lego Dimensions and Starlink, this game isn't being developed further. But can still be played and the figures can be found very cheaply second-hand. You can still play the game, and create your own experiences in the Toy Box creator mode, but you can't go online or share your creations. Bases are also cross compatible on most consoles, but not for Xbox 360 or Xbox One. The Wii, Wii U, PS3 and PS4 bases will all work on these machines. The Xbox 360 base will only work on that console and that goes for the Xbox One base.
This Friday (28th August) sees the release of Disney Infinity 3.0. As the name suggests, it’s the third set the series with its own software and playsets that will only work with 3.0. Each character had a unique world within the single playset piece that only characters from that franchise can use, so the rest of the Incredibles family can be used in the Incredibles game etc.

The game would have followed multiple plots, with a different one in each Play Set, like its predecessors. Disney Infinity 3.0 is the third major set to arrive from Disney featuring a mix of toys and game that interact with each other. While this new trend (started by Activision’s Skylanders) is a fantastic idea that kids and adults love, it can also prove expensive and confusing as new toys and sets are released that only work with certain versions of the game. Disney have put together a compatibility chart for Infinity 1.0 and 2.0. We’re expecting them to add a new 3.0 version of this soon, but the same rules apply for 1.0 and 2.0 to Infinity 3.0 as between 1.0 and 2.0 figures and playsets. These Figures will work in the 2.0 & 3.0 edition Toy Boxes, but not in the original Disney Infinity (1.0) Toy Box.
Play Sets are the least flexible as far as compatibility goes, as each Play Set is only playable in the edition it was released for.

Create your own story and play through experiences as characters from the Avengers, Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy universes, as they come to life by placing their Figures on the Disney Infinity Base. You can even use your original Disney Infinity Figures and Power Discs in Toy Box Mode in Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes. If you’re thinking of buying the new Disney Infinity 3.0 set and already own either of the other sets then there are options to save you some hard earned cash. These Figures will not work with the 1.0 Edition or 2.0 Edition Toy Boxes, or any Play Sets associated with those editions.
About This Game
Figures are forward-compatible in the Toy Box mode. Use your Figures from Disney Infinity and Disney Infinity 2.0 in the Disney Infinity 3.0 Toy Box. However, new Figures from Disney Infinity 3.0 cannot be used in Disney Infinity and Disney Infinity 2.0. Over all a great family game, with a moderately high cost to get started, and very high cost for those with collectors OCD, but the figures are beautiful and if you like Marvel, Disney, or Star Wars stand on their own as great little shelf pieces if nothing else. Some Figures will have the ability to cross over into other Play Sets of the same universe, but you will first need to find their matching crossover coins. Power Discs
