Earthsea Cycle Series by Ursula K. Le Guin - Goodreads

This adaptation was narrated by Dame Judi Dench, with Michael Maloney as Ged, and used a wide range of actors with different regional and social accents to emphasize the origins of the Earthsea characters (for instance, Estarriol and others from the East Reach were played by actors with Southern Welsh accents). In the Archipelago "red-brown" skin is typical, while the people of the East Reach have darker "black-brown" complexions. The books, first published in the late 1960’s, are written in a simple, free-flowing style and I quickly fell under their charm. Le Guin, The Earthsea Cycle was published between 1968 and 2001, beginning with A Wizard of Earthsea. The Kargad exception proves the rule: the Archipelago has room for animism, possible reincarnation and a Hades-like afterlife, but not for churches, mosques, synagogues or shrines, and Earthsea is a more peaceful world than Earth as a consequence.

It is what the story is about, and the wonders Earthsea offers are scaled accordingly, to the sublime horizons of a life.Ged’s story is told with the calm authority of an age-old Icelandic saga, yet stitched here and there with passages of pure beauty for its own sake. Her use of "true names" continues the legacy of what magic truly is, knowing and understanding, and recognizing that power is inherent in this knowledge. The world of Earthsea is one of sea and islands: a vast archipelago of hundreds of islands surrounded by mostly uncharted ocean. Even Earthsea’s islands, with names such as Atnini, Komokome, Selidor and the Isle of the Ear, have a habit of morphing into islands in each reader’s memory: the Hebrides, the Cyclades, the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, or Hawaii.

Descriptions of people and places are rich enough to nourish the reader’s imagination, but frugal enough to allow it to collaborate in the act of creation. The training of wizards involves epigrams and parables that would not be out of place in a Buddhist monastery or a Taoist cell. The thing I like about them most is the way in which we follow the main characters, Ged and Tenar all the way from childhood to old age, it really feels like you have lived their lives with them.Nature, the elements and man are balanced in an equilibrium which, Gaia theory-like, is a holistic organism, and one part of it cannot be changed without influencing another part. One such key moment occurs early in his training, shortly after he has been taken under the wing of Ogion, his mentor and friend. Tales from Earthsea also includes about 30 pages of fictional reference material titled "A Description of Earthsea" (2001). The language is spare and beautiful and the stories have something to offer your heart at many stages of your life. In my assessment it detracts from the original series in that it should not have been included as a "quartet" as it has a very different tone.

Ursula Le Guin shows that the demons that are inside us all should be accepted and battled rather than ignored or denied. Ged is a superb creation, by any measure, and was the Archmage of my bookshelf even before he became the Archmage of Earthsea. The Books of Earthsea: The Complete Illustrated Edition publication contents at the Internet Speculative Fiction Database. In the fifth and last novel of the series, The Other Wind, it is revealed that the Dry Land is a part of the dragons' domain that was stolen from them by the earliest mages in an attempt gone awry to obtain immortality. Ursula K Le Guin’s A Wizard of Earthsea, introduced by David Mitchell and illustrated by David Lupton, is available exclusively from the Folio Society. I still have the phrase 'as far away as Selidor' stuck in my head along with other phrases, it is so eloquent! The tales may well be appreciated by children and adults alike, but the sophisticated prose, the very language used to form the riveting narratives, is as rich and flavorful as dark Belgian chocolate. The Earthsea Cycle, also known as Earthsea, is a series of high fantasy books written by the American author Ursula K.
