About this deal

Then, after a stint covering show business she was appointed Foreign Correspondent of the Daily Mail , an association that endures today, almost 40 years later, and one which finally allowed her real talent to shine through.

I’ve tried taking away phones/telling them where to sit/taking their lunch but they refuse to give it over, and I don’t know what to do. But well over half the time, simply picking up the phone has results, and the defiant one says something like “Well, you want me to give up my lunch AND my drink! Now, please don’t think me impolite with what I’m about to say, but it may be easier if we just face the facts head-on.

A book leaves our collection of over seven million titles and begins a new chapter every two seconds, enabling more goods to be reused. I have these two kids who constantly talk to each other, but when I try to separate them, they insist on sitting together. It’s one of the few snakes that even experienced teachers should hand off to an administrator if they can’t convince the student to comply. A marvellous memoir of great insight and wit from one of Britain's most formidable and accomplished journalists. After graduating she began her career at the Manchester office of the Daily Express, where the news editor took an instant dislike to her - she was a southerner, educated and - worst of all - female. She has very credible comments to make on a huge range of topics if her views are strongly held at times, she certainly seems to be a good judge of charcters in the forefront of the world stage and politics in particular.

She was born in Rawalpindi – then in India – in 1941 to an oilman father, and spent her early childhood skipping through Basra and the Raj. She is also adept at using her wardrobe as a secret weapon, 'dressing like a bird-brain', as she puts it. Occasionally, she bigs herself up a bit, sneaking into places where lesser mortals fail, usually by putting on a dotty-old-lady act, in a way that's not always convincing, but this is a rattling good read and will while away several happy hours. Exchanging Valentines can be an awkward process, especially when you consider “Vinegar Valentines” and other snarky sentiments - whatever your tastes, enjoy the sweet and sour cards alike in this gallery! She's at her most amusing describing the antics of people she dislikes, such as the Clintons (both of them) and Princesses Margaret and Diana.

Leslie had attended the course to get the other side of the story after interviewing those high priestesses of women's lib Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem (they hated each other, incidentally). She quotes approvingly Dame Freya Stark's comment that the great advantage of being a woman is that 'one can always pretend to be more stupid than one is, and no one is surprised'. The actual book is interesting although I was more interested in the stories she reported than the earlier chapters about her early years.

I realize that many teachers feel that schools already exert a great deal of control over student lives. I take their damn cellphones away, giving myself extra points if I can swipe it from under their nose without signaling intent. One of the most valuable pieces of advice I received, from two different teachers in two different years (student teaching, first year), was that a new teacher had to know what “quiet” is. You may not agree with her political views, but she’s certainly seen enough to earn the right to those views. Killing My Own Snakes clears away the haze of nostalgia that surrounds the old Fleet Street – it sounds like a haven of alcoholic misogynists – but it is a lament nonetheless. It then rapidly descended into endless names of people I was either not familiar with or didn't care much for. In the recent Reuters/Press Gazette launch of the Newspaper Hall of Fame she was listed as one of the forty most influential journalists in the last forty years. EXCLUSIVEKate is reunited with her three children for the first time in two weeks after leaving hospital. After graduating from Oxford she began her career in Manchester in the Sixties on the Daily Express, where she was regarded with suspicion and even hostility for being both educated and female.
