About this deal

At 6.1in, the Xperia 10 V has grown a teensy bit compared to last year, but keeps the same better-than-Full HD 2520×1080 resolution. The cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio is taller and slimmer than most rivals, and while the bezels aren’t overly slim, they leave enough space at the top of the phone for the front-facing camera. We’re used to punch-holes and notches now, but it’s still refreshing when a phone lands with an uninterrupted view. The Xperia 10 V has more in the way of picture and sound upgrades than the 1 V, with the 6.1-inch OLED display (also 21:9 aspect ratio) now apparently 1.5 times brighter, which Sony says makes outdoor visibility better. The 10 V also gets a stereo speaker set-up this year, with a 20 per cent increase in volume and a more balanced and direct sound, which Sony says is supported with a low noise amplifier. Xperia 10 V Specifications | Sony UK

Starting with the flagship Xperia 1 V, most of the upgrades are centred around the camera this year, which shouldn't come as a surprise as that was the case last year. It's using a new sensor called the Exmor T for mobile, which Sony claims is 1.7 times bigger than the sensor found in the 1 IV. This new camera module means that the Xperia 1 V can produce images with better dynamic range, as well as clearer and brighter low-light shots. Moving onto Avatar: The Way of Water, also on Disney Plus, the intense battle sequence towards the end of the film provides us with a chance to study motion on this device. Despite the hectic camera movements and lots of fast-moving subjects on screen, the Xperia refrains from stuttering and motion remains smooth and cinematic. This film also affirms much of what we felt from Rogue One, including the vibrant colours and excellent clarity.Moving onto the more basic Xperia model, and arguably the more interesting of the two, the Xperia 10 V. The 10 IV was a surprise hit for 2022, as it provided a thoroughly enjoyable AV experience despite its reasonable asking price. This comparison might seem one-sided with the Xperia 1 V seemingly beating the 10 V in most key areas, but there’s a good reason for that: the Xperia 1 V costs over triple the amount of the Xperia 10 V – in the UK, at least. And, just like the rest, the Xperia 10 V follows in the footsteps of its siblings, front-loading a relatively simple point-and-shoot camera app that includes a curious button into a much more complicated interface designed to get you hooked on manual controls. Compared to the Pixel 7a, Samsung Galaxy A54 5G, or even the lightning-fast Poco F5, you can get a lot more for not a lot more, be it more processing power, faster charging or better long-term software support. That means your standard adaptor lying around won’t really need upgrading, giving a point to the “green” practice of simply using what you already have, but it’s another case of Sony’s handset struggling to keep up with the truly convenient features of the phones it’s trying to compete with for the same money.

Xperia 1 V vs Sony Xperia 10 V: What’s the difference? Sony Xperia 1 V vs Sony Xperia 10 V: What’s the difference?

The Xperia 10 V, powered by the Snapdragon 695 5G 6nm chipset, is no slouch either. It handles everyday tasks with ease, but it’s not as powerful for demanding applications or gaming. If performance is a top priority for you, the Xperia 5 V is the way to go. The Sony Xperia 1 V and Xperia 10 V are the latest smartphones in Sony’s 2023 collection, but what’s the difference between the two? Also, Sony has done a lot of work with overheating – an issue that plagued the Xperia 1 IV – with a 60% larger heat diffusion sheet that should keep it much cooler over long periods of use. A double tap of the thin buffer pops out a multitasking menu. It’s a little fiddly compared to some other solutions, but between two tabs and a bunch of common apps, you just hold and drag your desired one into the split area beneath. Tapping it then launches it in a half-view window beneath your current one. While it won’t be the best way to listen to music, watching a section of Avatar using the built-in speakers proves more than acceptable, with clear dialogue and a much fuller and richer sound compared to last year’s 10 IV. Bassier sound effects such as explosions are a lot more impactful and present, and the Xperia 10 V can now better balance volume without sounding distorted, thin and harsh. The Xperia 1 V is Sony’s 2023 flagship and, as such, it should come as no surprise that it’s a powerhouse of processing power with Qualcomm’s top-end Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset at its heart, coupled with an ample 12GB of RAM and either 256GB or 512GB of storage.
