One of the 2 players chooses 1 maroon rectangle, 1 maroon square and 2 red squares from the small pieces. The two player puzzle game mode is accomplished by dividing the board into two sections, each player chooses five blocks and are also given 4 small "filler" blocks of 1 and 2 squares. The two or three player strategy game is accomplished on a square board divided into 64 smaller squares. As it is, recently I have been drawn back to Katamino whenever I had a spare 10-15 minutes before dinner. For example a Penta 6 is created by laying the slider between the number 6 and the number 7 on the game board (see below).

The game consists of 12 different pieces constructed of right angled blocks so each piece is made of 5 “squares”. A PENTA is a group of several pentaminos which perfectly fills the rectangle bound by the positioning of the slider. Choose one each of the mirrored image shapes and add them to the twelve others and you’ll have what is known as a set of Pentominoes. When you are ready for more challenges, start again on Line B, Line C and so on, until you have completed Line G. Gigamic really knows what they are doing when it comes to wooden games – and just holding the pieces feels really nice.

To start playing, all you do is remove all the pentaminos and divider from the board, set them to one side, and then flip to page one of the book!
