About this deal

An argument with Sam about a window which appears to open itself leads to a confession from an exhausted Jen that she has heard ghostly footsteps in the baby’s nursery and the sound of a man crying at the same time each night (you guessed it, 2:22 am) since Sam has been away. Sam reveals that his work trip was to a rural island where he lost his phone, and was unable to contact Jenny leaving her and daughter Phoebe alone in the house.

I’d be curious to see it live in that it includes mounting tension about the supposed ghosts with sound cue jump scares but it also includes an interesting debate among the characters about belief versus science. The character development is much better than it even needs to be, and I am sure it works like gangbusters on stage. Jake Wood in particular demonstrates a flair for comic timing and is hilarious as the rough-and-ready and yet surprising believer in all things spiritual.

Over one adrenaline-filled night - as the foxes scream outside - secrets will emerge and ghosts may appear. Felton’s commitment to the smart-ass Sam assuages those fears and the audience easily relaxes into believing his ‘better than you’ role. Danny Robins’ storytelling is clever, witty and easily allows the audience to understand the characters, leading the narrative creatively to a climax no-one saw coming. There’s an obvious romantic backstory between Sam and Lauren, but neither character is convincingly drawn. What unfolds is a tense but thoughtful – and often humorous – evening as the friends reveal their own beliefs and encounters. But it ultimately pivots away from these larger questions of why we believe in ghosts and whether we should to satisfy a hunger for a conclusive explanation. The spooky atmosphere is set from the start with a digital clock circling through the hours until it hits 2:22 with a startling red light and bloodcurdling scream putting you on edge from the start. But still a good read, that should have taken me a day but due to uni and working has taken me like a week. I don't think it's fair for me to really review it as I've not seen the play only read it but I found it enjoyable and did not predict what would happen at 2:22! s premise is a simple one – during the dinner Jenny reveals at 2:22 every evening, for the past week, she’s been experiencing paranormal phenomena; a piece of information imbued to the audience in a startling opening scene.

On 10 February 2023, it was announced that the play will embark on a UK tour starting at the Theatre Royal, Bath on 1 September with dates until May 2024. The sound design includes a sassy Alexa and a baby monitor although a slight criticism of the sound design would be the loud ‘red herring’ fox noises; used as a shock factor the audio is very intrusive and seemingly unrealistic.I am huge fan of Danny Robins’ script, it’s such a fun and thrilling night at the theatre and I look forward to spooking audiences up and down the country… everyone enjoys to be a little scared sometimes, right? Laughs, tension, and jump-out-of-your-seat scary – it’s going to be a good night out with plenty to talk about over a bevvy after. Above it all hovers a menacing red digital clock that counts down to the titular 2:22 with a perpetual dread.
