About this deal

We have a wide range of handwriting activities and resources to help your children improve their penmanship. Strengthening fine motor skills and practising pencil control will form an important part of your KS1 childrens’ handwriting journey, right into year 2. Your child will practise holding a writing tool correctly with these fun Fantasy Handwriting Worksheets. They’ll be developing their fine motor skills by making small movements with their hand and wrists to trace the different patterns. In year 1, children learn all about letter formation, lower-case and upper-case letters, and how to write to size. Be sure to find out what handwriting style your child is learning at school. Consistency is essential at this stage, so it is important not to correct something that you think is an error but that is actually part of the style your child is learning.

While children do learn new language and ideas from speaking and listening, the type of language we use in writing is often very different from that in speech. Reading regularly to your child, especially longer chapter books that they might not be able to yet read independently, is a great way to support their writing. Add some writing to the crafts – can they write with chalk, paint brushes or crayons? Can they make an attractive sign for their door or books? Making time to hear your child read isn’t just good for their reading. Seeing words in print helps them to understand the words, to spell them, and to see how grammar and punctuation are used to make meaning. Write simple, coherent narratives about personal experiences and those of others (real or fictional) In Year 2, your child will learn to form letters at the right size and to join letters when appropriate. Read on to discover the National Curriculum expectations for handwriting in Year 2, and to find out how you can support your child at home.

And for something more exciting and engaging than a simple handwriting worksheet, the Year 3 and 4 Statutory Spellings and Handwriting Mindfulness Activity Booklet looks fantastic, can be used for mindfulness colouring alongside handwriting and spelling activities. What is cursive handwriting?

Keep on practising handwriting skills and finding time to improve handwriting abilities in KS1, as this is what will really help children to develop their skills. Why not have some fun tracing activities, such as our nautical At The Seaside Pattern Tracing Fine Motor Skills Activity , on hand as an extension task for fast finishers? You might also like to use our useful Handwriting Booklets to chip away at handwriting skills for 15 minutes every morning. This is a great starter activity for the day too! 3. Keep on colouring.Demarcate most sentences in their writing with capital letters and full stops, and use question marks correctly when required I wonder why the author has chosen to describe the castle as “gloomy”?
