Hasan al-Basri said, “A person will say: ‘By Allah, I have recited the entire Qur’an and I have not neglected a single letter’; while in reality he has neglected the entire Qur’an. The Qur’an cannot be seen in his manners or his actions.” I heard the Messeger of Allah recite 'at-Tur' in the Maghrib prayer, and when he got to the verses { "Were they created by nothing, or were they themselves the creators? Or did they create the heavens and the earth? No, but they have no firm Belief. Or are with them the treasures of your Lord? Or are they the tyrants with the authority to do as they like?"} [ at-Tur; 35-37], my heart wanted to fly from my body out of awe." The Quran is a book of guidance for all of humanity, and per Islamic belief, Allah has promised that He will preserve it in its original form until the Day of Judgment. The inimitable style of the Quran and the superior wisdom in it are definitive evidences that it is the Word of God. Besides, the Quran has many miraculous verses proving that it is undoubtedly a revelation from God and not the work of a human. Verily, each verse is like a date: the more you chew it, the more of its sweetness is released." Abu Sulayman heard this and commented: "True. It is the case with one of you that if he begins one chapter of it, he wants to read it to the end." Abu Jahl replied: "So that they can give it to you, as they see that you went to Muhammad to get some of his food." This set places one or a couple of words of the 'ayah in one line of a column and gives their meanings side by side in another column, taking care to see that the flow and intelligibility of the English meanings are not thereby lost. This method enables the reader to identify which English words or phrases represent the meaning of which words in the Arabic text. It has the additional advantage of keeping the meaning strictly to the wording of the text or importing in the meaning any word or expression that has no correspondence with anything in the text. Permissible stops: long spaces were added at certain places where it is permissible to stop. It helps to avoid stopping at wrong places or times.
