About this deal

This provides further practice for our students to be able to strengthen their subject knowledge, in preparation for teaching key areas of the National Curriculum.

As part of my PGCE I purchased many books - this one being 1 of 3 that I actually use for my teaching. This is the perfect companion to Mathematics Explained for Primary Teachers, 6th edition and now comes with over 800 questions!

This giant workbook is packed with fun activities to help children practise their English and Maths skills. He has worked as a primary teacher and as a lecturer in primary teacher education for 18 years, following an earlier career in the IT industry. There is still a huge reliance in the book of using bare numbers to explain concepts and a lack of use of concrete resources or visuals to demonstrate conceptual understanding and how to teach these concepts effectively to children. Tried and tested, the fifth edition of Derek Haylock’s much loved textbook matches the 2014 curriculum requirements for England.

Reasoning and Problem-solving questions encourage you to use and apply mathematical concepts in solving mathematical puzzles or problems in real life situations. Since working in a primary school I have referred to this book many times to develop my knowledge and understanding further and aids me to be able to offer more to the children I work with. This Student Workbook reinforces and applies concepts introduced in Derek Haylock's Mathematics Explained for Primary Teachers. With over 700 tested questions endorsed by primary PGCE trainees, along with detailed solutions and explanatory notes, the Student Workbook helps you gain the confidence you need to understand, apply and teach the primary maths curriculum.

Lesson Plan Activities by Ralph Manning support content-focused chapters and contain creative mathematics tasks across the primary age range. Of particular use are the ‘teaching points’ sections and links to video explanations and further practice.

Every chapter integrates children’s learning, classroom practice, and teacher’s own requirements for subject knowledge, making this the ideal text to guide you through your studies and beyond. Haylock emphasises the importance of teaching written methods with understanding and one key strategy he exemplifies to achieve this is the use of representation.Clear, worked examples of calculation methods are combined with useful insights into the prior knowledge and understanding that children need. SAGE Primary Mathematics Student Panel LESSON PLANS AND WORKSHEETS: Save time with ideas and resources for planning your lessons.

He has worked as a primary teacher and as a lecturer in primary teacher education for 18 years, following a career in IT. It covers adding and subtracting, multiplying and dividing, times tables, fractions, measuring and shapes, with all the answers at the back of the book. The inclusion of a section on using addition to check subtraction is well explained - this is a useful addition to the fifth edition. I like to recommend this for this group to help them with mathematics pedagogy in training and beyond. Checking Understanding questions are designed to help you check your own knowledge of terminology, understanding of key concepts and principles, and your mastery of important skills.A group of friendly jungle animals gently guide them through each topic, and tricky concepts are broken into easy-to-follow steps to help build confidence.
