Jane's Information Group was founded in 1898 by Fred T. Jane, who had begun sketching ships as an enthusiast naval artist while living in Portsmouth. This gradually developed into an encyclopedic knowledge, culminating in the publishing of All the World's Fighting Ships (1898). [1] The company then gradually branched out into other areas of military expertise. The books and trade magazines published by the company are often considered the de facto public source of information on warfare and transportation systems. Already a Janes customer? Read more here. Ukraine strengthens air defence of critical infrastructure Oct 14: The first S-500 55R6M Prometey (Prometheus) strategic air-defence system has entered service with a unit in the Moscow region, the TASS news agency reported on 13 October, citing a source close to the Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD). The first regimental set is to be followed by a second in the first half of 2022, the source added. No official announcement has been made by the MoD, but Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov told the RIA Novosti news agency in September that deliveries were under way to Russian forces. These initial S-500 units may be intended primarily for training purposes or limited service, as the Izvestia newspaper reported on 12 October that Rostec CEO Sergei Chemezov has said serial production and deliveries of the S-500 are scheduled for 2025. In the introduction to his first edition of the Fighting Ships, Mr. Jane wrote: “I personally inspected the greater part of the naval ships herein.” In addition to this personal knowledge, he had gained the friendship of Navy men the world over, and from them he secured the details of ships built, building, and being planned. These details he included in his books. But like the good reporter that he was, he would never divulge the source of his information.

The London publishing firm of Sampson, Low, Marston & Company have published the Fighting Ships from its beginning. In addition, the Boston firm of Little, Brown & Company brought out the first edition in the United States. The fourth edition was published by Harper & Brothers in 1901, and the fifth edition by Munn & Company in 1902. No other American firm, so far as can be learned, undertook its publication until the Macmillan Company brought out a magnificent edition at the height of the Second World War. Russian forces began joint training exercises with Uzbekistan at the Termez training ground in the Surkhandarya Region the exercises will run until 10 August with the active phase finishing on 06 August. The exercises are believed to have involved some 1,500 troops from the Central Military District’s 15th Motorised Brigade (Peacekeeping) and the 3rd Spetsnaz Brigade, supported by four Tu-22M3 which conducted a flight from Russia on 06 July to bomb targets in Uzbekistan. Oct 7: During The Russian military announced on 29 September that its forces had completed their withdrawal from Belarus that day, following the conclusion of ‘Zapad-2021' strategic exercises on 17 September. The scenario for Zapad-2021 was similar to that of its predecessor in 2017: an alliance of NATO countries conducting a limited invasion of Belarus following a period of political instability instigated by Western forces. For the purposes of the exercise, all parties were given pseudonyms; Belarus became ‘Polesei', Russia ‘the Central Federation', and their alliance ‘the Northern Coalition'. The NATO countries, ‘Nyaris' (Lithuania), Pomorie (Poland), and ‘the Polar Republic' (parts of Latvia and components of NATO partner forces in Poland), represent a belief or hope within the Russian military that a conflict with NATO would initially be limited in scope, enabling the Russian armed forces and Kremlin to manage escalation and limit its horizontal growth. This belief in turn determines the forces and means committed to the fight, with the intention of using only the forces needed to achieve the desired goals of protecting Belarus and forcing peace with NATO before the conflict escalates beyond control. To Americans his section dealing with the United States Navy in 1897 should be of especial interest. He lists 13 Civil War monitors built from 1863-1865 and notes that “Most of these ships are unseaworthy.” He includes the “dynamite” cruiser Vesuvius, built in 1888, and notes that she carried “3 pneumatic guns, but these are being removed.” He also includes the Dolphin, one of the first ships of the White Squadron authorized, and all the battleships that were destined soon to bring about the destruction of the Spanish fleet under Admiral Cervera at Santiago. Cervera’s ships are also listed under Espagne, including the Reina Mercedes, built in 1887. Oct: The Chinese and Russian navies have concluded their first-ever joint patrols in international waters east of Japan in the Western Pacific: a further indication of the growing defence co-operation between the two countries that has been raising concerns among the United States and its allies. The Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) said in a statement that the patrols, which took place from 17 to 23 October, involved five warships from each navy, with the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) being represented by Type 055 destroyer Nanchang, Type 052D destroyer Kumming, Type 054A frigates Liuzhou and Binzhou, and Type 903A replenishment vessel Dongpinghu.Previously, these had been exclusively the concern of a handful of professionals and politicians. By the end of the 19 th century, democratic politics and a technological revolution in warfare had created a more general awareness of defence problems. Fred T. Jane would be one of the first to meet the growing demand for objective and dispassionate analysis of such issues. Jane's Combat Simulations was a brand of computer flight simulation games and naval warfare simulations produced between 1996 and 2000 under license to Electronic Arts. Already a Janes customer? Jane was born in Richmond, Surrey, the oldest of a large family of a Church of England vicar, the Reverend John Jane. He was intended for the Army but failed to pass his examinations. He turned to journalism, and in 1889, at the age of 24, went to sea as a special artist for the Pictorial World. It was on this cruise that he laid the foundation for a knowledge of the navies of the world that has seldom been equalled. He made later cruises with the ships of the Royal Navy as correspondent or artist for the Daily Chronicle, the world-famed Illustrated London News, or the Standard. Already a Janes customer? It was originally published by John F. T. Jane (usually known as "Fred T.") in 1898 as Jane's All the World's Fighting Ships. Its success launched a number of military publications carrying the name "Jane's". It is a unit of Jane's Information Group, which is now owned by IHS. The following is a list of major works which followed the format of Jane’s original work: Apr 4: Russia's Russia has lost its first Sukhoi Su-35 ‘Flanker-E' multirole fighter on combat operations over Ukraine, imagery posted online on 3 April reveal. The premier operational combat aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) reportedly came down in the Kharkiv region of eastern Ukraine, near the town of Izyum. Although no information relating to how the aircraft came down has been revealed, the imagery released shows it to have come to rest largely intact, before being consumed by fire. The aircraft is identifiable as being an Su-35 by it being a single-seat ‘Flanker' variant without canards, and equipped with the combination missile rails and wingtip-mounted electronic countermeasures systems in place of the missile rails of the baseline Su-27/30 versions. A brigade set of S-500 entered service with the 15th Special Purpose Air Defence Army in the Moscow region.
