About this deal

The number of pens that end up in landfill is not great so why not buy a refillable pen? These beautiful looking Akamba Ink Pens are made in Kenya, by Kenyan artisans from wild olive wood. All ingredients are sourced from American farms and have been grown without pesticides or herbicides. Each pencil is either FSC or PEFC-certified, both sustainable forestry certifications that mean the wood is harvested from sustainable and regenerative sources. Pencil shavings are biodegradable, even though they decompose quite slowly; because they are usually made from cedarwood. Nonetheless, if you dispose of them in your waste bin, they are most likely going to end up in landfills. That is not exactly great for the environment. Thus, if you wish to recycle pencil shavings, it is best you do it by yourself. To begin, you would have to dedicate a bin or a substitute to collect your pencil shavings.

My personal preference here would be to buy a canvas bag as I prefer not to buy any plastic at all (when possible), but they aren’t always the best in a rainy UK. You can waterproof canvas yourself by waxing it, or you can compromise and go for a bag made from recycled materials. Hemp

They also make a wide selection of recycled paper notebooks. The paper is handmade khadda paper, made from recycled cotton, while cover materials vary between recycled paper and leather. Because most pencils are made of cedarwood, which tends to scare troublesome insects away, working pencil shavings into the soil around your plants keep them safe from pest invasions. Pencil shavings can also be used to retain soil moisture. And although pencil shavings according to a study do not act as fertilizers, they still are useful when mixed with other compost materials. Wooden pencils usually fall into the latter category. The pencil shavings/stubs are too small to be sorted unless gathered up in large quantities. Lamy looks fancy amidst your eco office supplies, but they made the list due to their refillable ink options.

While making our long-running list, we may have scribbled a mistake or two, but these recycled rubber erasers save the day (in more ways than just erasing). In case you haven’t noticed, Onyx + Green is perhaps the biggest name in sustainable school supply brands. Certifications: Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), Leather Working Group (LWG), Art and Creative Materials Institute A pen that looks super cute and lasts for 7 years? Yes please… but hold up, this pen may be super cute but it is also super expensive. If it really does last 7 years then it’s worth the investment, just don’t lend it to anyone, ever! With a choice of 100% recycled polyester (from recycled water bottles) or 100% recycled nylon (from industry offcuts), you simply can’t go wrong with these eco-friendly options. You might want to try purchasing eco-friendly pencils that are produced from recycled materials. There are also seed pencils like Sprout that contain seeds. All you need to do is to plant the stub of your pencil when you are done using it and voila: you have a new vegetable or tree in your garden within a month! Help your garden with your pencil shavings: If you are a lover of all things green – including green gardens – pencil shavings can be of great help. This is because pencil shavings can be used in making compost, mulching, as well as acting as a pest deterrent. The erasers themselves are usually made of either natural rubber or synthetic rubber. Natural rubber is biodegradable, but synthetic rubbers aren’t.

You should however have some choice available to you when buying school shirts and jumpers. Always try to go for 100% natural cotton (organic and sustainable ideally) or other natural material. There are already enough micro-plastics in the sea and the environment that wherever you can you should avoid plastic in your clothes. Most pencils are made of biodegradable materials, while some others (like those with plastic casing) are not. Nevertheless, not all parts of pencils made mostly with biodegradable materials are biodegradable. The most recyclable piece of a pencil is the ferrule, the metal piece that holds the rubber/eraser in place. This can be made from brass or aluminum. Both metals can be easily recycled in large quantities.Waste Recycling: Recycling plastic pens are not very viable which means that a lot of them end up in landfills, considering that 2 billion pens are used in the United States alone every year. Pencils also tend to end up in landfill too but they are made materials which are able to biodegrade. It’s no secret, when shopping for eco-friendly kids’ school supplies, we search for biodegradable and recyclable, but Sprout World digs deep (in the dirt) and through innovation has created these plantable and biodegradable pencils. We want to make sure the materials are not only sustainable themselves, but that they’re ethically sourced and ethically manufactured, too. Why are they so good? These pencils are non-toxic, biodegradable, made from sustainably sourced materials and use sustainable production techniques. Not only that but they are FSC certified wood, which means that every time a tree is harvested another one is planted.

While some of these brands could certainly stand to be a little more transparent about their production processes, we especially appreciate the smaller brands that make all their products in-house, as this is the best way to ensure full traceability and control of the supply chain.Plastic Free Zone stands out for their bamboo pencil sharpener, as one of the few eco-friendly school supply brands to offer this alternative. Like Earth Grown Crayons, which are made of organic, vegan soy wax and mineral pigments that have been certified non-toxic by the Art and Creative Materials Institute.
