Just when you thought the Mavic Mini was the most impressive small drone available, DJI has upped the ante with the Mavic Air 2, which sits comfortably between that model and the two prosumer Mavic 2 models. OcuSync 2.0 supports both 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz frequency bands. It features stronger interference resistance due to automatic frequency switching, delivering 1080p video transmission feeds at up to 10 km (when unobstructed, free of interference, and FCC-compliant). The overall design has been dramatically changed and with improved connection to the controller, noticeably longer battery life, 4K video at 60 fps, 48MP stills from the new 1/2-inch Quad Bayer sensor and a whole host of new functionality, this is a significant upgrade on the previous Mavic Air. That's not the end of the safety features either. You also get Advanced Pilot Assistance System (APAS) 3.0, which when enabled will reroute the drone when obstacles come into its path. The idea behind this is that pilots can confidently fly in more complex locations without fear of crashing.
The Mavic Air 2 isn't perfect, but it's a pleasure to fly and shoot with, and could easily become the most popular DJI drone to date. Will I need to register the DJI Mavic Air 2? Unobstructed, free of interference, and when FCC-compliant. Maximum flight range specification is a proxy for radio link strength and resilience. Always follow local rules and regulations and fly your drone within your visual line of sight unless otherwise permitted. A robust 3500mAh battery can keep the Mavic Air 2 flying for up to 34 minutes at a time. While in the air, you can fly the drone at speeds up to 43 mph up to 11.5 miles away. The included remote controller supports OcuSync 2.0 technology to provide you with flight telemetry data and a live view of what the drone sees on your attached smartphone. It can transmit up to 1080p quality video from up to 6.2 miles away. Altogether, the Mavic Air 2 gives you the tools you need to expand your filmmaking with creative and professional quality aerial footage. The included remote controller works with your existing smartphone to control the Mavic Air 2 and view live footage from the drone. It’s constructed with a comfortable and ergonomic grip and provides up to 4 hours of battery life. Integrated antennas help to improve the signal performance. SmartPhotoIn terms of safety features, the Mavic Air 2 provides obstacle sensors of the front and rear of the drone that, when switched on, can help to avoid collisions. These are turned on by default, and for most people keeping them turned on is the best option. The extra weight didn’t slow the drone down, though. It achieves the same 68.4 kilometers per hour (42.5 miles per hour) of its predecessor and is just a hair slower than the Mavic 2’s 72 kph. Battery Charging Hub: Recharge your batteries while out filming to help maximize the amount of footage you can capture in a single outing The Mavic Air 2 drone delivers a number of significant updates over the previous model, perhaps most notably the new Quad Bayer image sensor, updated battery with improved flying times. There are also several advanced software features and let’s not forget the new controller which is also a very welcome ergonomic addition. The new sensor is a highly capable upgrade, which is both larger and has better light recording capabilities. HDR when done right can really help with taking images in wide dynamic ranges and the Air 2 performs HDR admirably for both video and stills images. A Suite of HDR Features: Mavic Air 2 is preprogrammed with a suite of HDR features including HDR video and HDR panorama. HDR video max resolution is 4K 30fps.
Beyond the safety improvements, the Mavic Air 2 has inherited many advanced features from both the Mavic Pro 2 and professional drones to provide smart capabilities in automated flight modes for capturing still and video. The camera performance, flight noise, flight time, and transmission system have all improved significantly, and the new DJI Fly app provides an even more streamlined flying experience. This was a problem with the original Mavic Air, and while it’s not the end of the world, it can slow you down when framing shots. This might be down to the pre-release version of the new DJI Fly app that we used for this review, so may be ironed out with firmware or app updates in the future– we'll update this review if that's the case.This means the Mavic Air 2 measures a tiny 180 x 97 x 84mm when folded – roughly equivalent to a 500ml bottle of beer – and just 183 x 253 x 77mm when unfolded. These specs have been determined through tests conducted with the latest firmware. Firmware updates can enhance performance, so updating to the latest firmware is highly recommended. Flying the Mavic Air 2 is just as easy as any other DJI drone thanks to the smart technologies employed. Not least the inclusion of OcuSync 2.0, which is a vastly superior method of transmission between the controller and drone than that used by the original Mavic Air.
The DJI Mavic Air 2 can shoot in 4K at 60 frames per second. The new camera also records video at 120 Mbps bitrate (up from 100 Mbps), beating other DJI consumer models. Additionally, the camera can capture 1080p slow-motion video at 120 and 240 fps. Other key features There is also an 'Aeronautical Knowledge and Safety Test' being developed for recreational drone pilots, but it's not yet clear when this will be introduced. This is a big boost over the original Mavic Air's 21-minute flight time and is even three minutes longer than the Mavic 2 models. While that doesn't sound much, you really do notice the increased flight duration and slower battery drain. APAS: Mavic Air 2 features the latest and most advanced autonomous flying from DJI. APAS 3.0 uses new mapping technology and flight path algorithms for ultra-smooth transitions around, under or over objects in the drone’s path. While its predecessor still looked like a toy drone, what we have here is a powerful device for drone enthusiasts with a penchant for quality aerial photography. The new departure of the DJI Mavic Air 2 is already evident in the design: the functional grey housing with folding rotor arms now strongly reminds of its more expensive sister models in the range, such as the DIJ Mavic 2. The gadget also appears more mature in its dimensions. When unfolded, it has a wingspan of 25.3 cm (7 cm wider than its predecessor). It also weighs more, 570g, which is also due to the more powerful battery. It uses a new controller, which is also slightly larger than its predecessor. You can connect your mobile device and controller using the improved DJI Fly mobile app. What's New? The Mavic Air 2 features new motors, new electronic speed controllers, improved battery technology and enhanced aerodynamics. These combine to provide increased flight speeds of up to 42mph in Sport Mode and a flight time of up to 34 minutes.
