Another interesting thing about kanji with vocab, is that if you know other words that also use the kanji of said word, it can become easier to remember. (Example: If you can comprehend " 守護", " 銭湯" and "売国 奴" then " 守銭奴" becomes easier)

That’s it. You can get fluent in Japanese just like that. But don’t forget that the most important part is immersion, Anki and grammar only assist your immersion.

I love it when students ask questions like this. It shows you’re really thinking about the language. In beginner classes I use often rōmaji (English letters) to write Japanese in class. This is to give you a head start in learning to speak. I do. It was kind of overwhelming. I scrolled and scrolled through my new Japanese phone, and wondered what all these little pictures could possibly be for. At the beginning of 2019, I decided to set myself a series of monthly Japanese study challenges. I’d do one every other month, and blog about it.

Anki is a spaced repetition system (SRS) flashcard program. It is designed to help you remember information. You can get it here How do you keep practising Japanese, even when it doesn’t seem relevant? How do you stay motivated, when your life and your motivations change? Hiragana seems fairly straightforward, I think. And when you start learning Japanese everything you read is written in hiragana, so by reading you constantly reinforce and remember. I’d pretty much given up trying, and then I discovered the Alivia’s Japanese Nook YouTube channel. On that channel Alivia has a video specifically about using Anki to study Japanese that has been very useful to me. It's a bit long, as it covers every detail of how to use it, and exactly how she has all the settings configured. But if you’ve never used Anki at all, it’s a very good guide to getting it set up and starting to use it. Try to understand messages. There is a lot you can infer from a TV show. Like Krashen says, you need to have “meaningful” (meaning focused) interaction with the language, rather than focusing on form (such as grammar). Reading ¶ I recommend you read Tae Kim and pause after The Writing System. This is to dispell any misconceptions you may have about kana, so you know exactly what they are and how they are used at first hand. So, you’ve learned different ways to say "Nice to meet you!" in Japanese. One way to say “nice to meet you” is “yoroshiku onegai shimasu”. The bulk of your language learning journey is learning vocabulary, so you will be doing a lot of it.From Wikipedia: “[The Input Hypothesis] states that learners progress in their knowledge of the language when they comprehend language input that is slightly more advanced than their current level. Krashen called this level of input “i+1”, where “i” is the learner’s interlanguage and “+1″ is the next stage of language acquisition.” For manga, I recommend KanjiTomo, it’s like Yomichan but for situations where you can’t select the text, e.g. in manga. It uses an OCR, so a little less reliable than Yomichan. To use, hover your mouse over whatever you want to look up. Android tools ¶ JLAB focuses on grammar and understanding Japanese in context with sound bites from Japanese shows and anime. It doesn’t attempt to teach kanji at all (by default the cards are even in roumaji, although fortunately it’s configurable). It roughly follows the Tae Kim grammar guide that’s freely available online.
