About this deal

Smith tries to make up for the absence of horror by throwing in more sex, but that’s fairly tame too (or at least boringly vanilla) and often unintentionally hilarious. His habit of using character’s full names doesn’t help.

Killer Crabs by Guy N. Smith | Goodreads Killer Crabs by Guy N. Smith | Goodreads

These are not just ordinary giant crabs with glowing red eyes. Their shells are bullet-proof. And tank-proof. And fire-proof. And they have a leader. And the leader has a plan! Imagine a fishing-obsessed 9 year-old making up the coolest guy he can think of, and you have Klin.Another big plus: while in "Origin of the Crabs" the crabs killed everyone in the same boring-ass way, Guy Smith really manages to mix it up this time. Sometimes the crabs snap off people's heads and then disembowel them. Sometimes they just tear them apart. Like the other book, though, Smith keeps reinforcing the fact that the crabs have REALLY mean faces, and that they DEFINITELY want to kill humans because they are SO MEAN. Okay, now we all know that sex/nudity and violent, bloody horror go together like peanut-butter and chocolate. HOWEVER, this pairing comes primarily in two separate combinations that are very, very different.

Because you wanted it, and I wanted it," he said. "And that's a good enough reason for any couple." We have an crime novel with giant crabs on the edge. We have a duffel bag of 20,000 pounds driving the plot. We even get main characters who are NOT KILLED BY CRABS, something that will become vanishingly rare as the series goes on. Not only are these gigantic enemies of mankind colossal in size and naturally armoured to the teeth (not that they have them) by their huge shells, but they also display a surprising level of cunning and intelligence. Led by a (briefly glimpsed) ‘King Crab ’, these organised crustacean ranks pose a severe threat that certainly gets the juices flowing! The battle at Barmouth as the crabs army invades the seaside community is perhaps the very pinnacle of the novel. The death, destruction, and utter mayhem caused by the sudden invading crab army is quite frankly superb!Dead Meat (1996) (omnibus of the first four books plus two new Sabat stories, Vampire Village and Hellbeat) There had been buskers in the cathedral city of Lichfield for centuries, but never one like Jonjo. Crowds are drawn irresistibly by his strange, haunting, hypnotic music, a weird melody that lingers with the listeners long afterwards, a nuisance by day but terrifying in the nocturnal hours, calling them, commanding them. The Kirby’s have forsaken a secure lifestyle for an idealistic organic farming project. They incur the contempt of the Deeps, an agronomist who seems hell bent on destroying the environment with his poisonous herbicides and pesticides. Then the terror begins… Smith appreciated his fans and throughout his long career he produced a number of fanzines, many containing his short stories. They were originally produced as catalogues for his book selling business, but eventually changed into the fan club fanzine Graveyard Rendezvous, which ran for 41 editions. Smith and his wife even opened up their home and welcomed fans every September for an annual convention, an event that lasted over 25 years. The novel’s virtues are in its fast moving story and easy to read prose (this doesn’t mean the writing is especially good, mind you!). But as a gorefest the book is a disappointment, and as a monster mash only marginally satisfying. I can only hope those problems are ironed out in the subsequent CRABS novels, as I like my trashy fiction heavy on the trash, dammit!

But although he has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the Giant Crabs Invading Wales genre, one that will probably never be matched by any other author, I think all his subsequent work must inevitably fall short of the sparse brilliance of Night of the Crabs.Cliff withdrew his left hand from the warmth of Pat’s tight sweater and felt for the fastener on her jeans. Then he pulled her zip down and she lifted herself up slightly off the ground so that he could unclothe her. The whiteness of her thighs was in itself seductive in the soft moonlight, the darker triangle of soft fluffy hair between them seeming to withhold secrets from him. Secrets of men who had lain there. Men who had been sexually satisfied beyond their wildest dreams. And of one man who had walked away in preference for another woman.
