About this deal

Forget Ant and Dec and Tony Hart; Michael is likely the longest-serving children's entertainer in history. Originally airing at around 5pm on weekdays, the show moved to a Saturday timeslot in 1972, before moving again to Sunday afternoons in January 1974.

Larry Marshall's wonderful, every day a change of programme and, think about it, wonderful stuff in those days, really, and very, very popular! For some unknown reason the boom seemed to have a feeling that I can move anywhere, do anything, this thing round my neck curtailed me and, funny, I wouldn't go forward! Clem Ashby again was a very good voice over for all the different things that he did and he was very, very popular so there were identifiable people in STV in my early days which, Bill Tennent was another who did a tremendous amount of work on Here and Now, another programme. When Rikki Fulton died 10 years ago - attracting the great and the good of Scottish entertainment to his funeral - more than a few people were surprised to see children's entertainer Glen Michael there.

From Tuesday 1 May 1962 he was given his own nine-week record programme on the Scottish Home Service, That Reminds Me, in which, according to his producer Ben Lyons, he would "look at some of the more recent news, dip into vintage newspaper reports, add his own lighthearted comments, and illustrate the combined result with some records". R: He's wrong because he, you know, he always boasts about oh, he's the first to have a dog on the desk! I: I think, remember STV when they did the shift to the new building and so on, when all that was going on. But it wasn't the talking lamp, it was the genie inside it that I wanted to get, and I never got round to saying that that's what it was! I was guilty about taking the money for doing something that was really enjoyable and, I think, without exception all of the crew say the same thing.

He became one of the regular cast of STV's first situation comedy, The Adventures of Francie and Josie, which ran over four series from 26 October 1962 to 8 August 1965. I: I think because technology's so much more advanced today, it would probably be slightly less difficult than it was in the old days naturally. Keep people’s spirits up and let them know you are there if they need help by leaving a note with your contact details. So, I gradually worked it out that no, it shouldn't be that, it should be a Glasgow, somebody identifiable so it became a wee fellow who talked like [unintelligible Glaswegian!I remember the day when he was six years of age and I took him to the studios and sat him on my knee and said, 'How would you like to do this one day? Back in the living room, when I suggest - judging from the photos on the wall - that his family is also one of his greatest achievements, Michael says I'm right.

The organisation, long since defunct, was often jokingly referred to as Every Night Something Awful. Age Scotland’s Big Survey found that two thirds of people in their 70s received offers of help from neighbours last year, rising to three quarters among those in their 80s. Michael looks back on these days with great fondness and pictures of both Milroy and Fulton feature in the hallway. Glen Michael's Cavalcade was one of STV's most popular programmes ever, playing to millions of viewers during its 26-year run. Youngsters who have seen me only on television are inclined to be confused when they come to the theatre. We had different guests - goalkeepers, footballers, I remember Mark Miller from the, played for Aberdeen and Alex Fergusson was the Manager of Aberdeen Football Club at the time and I mentioned to him about, we did a, I don't know whether you did it on the, wiggling our ears! He greets me from the door of the modest, unassuming cottage in which he lives with his wife Beryl, in the small Ayrshire village of Maidens. Michael presented a weekly show on Saga FM every Sunday, playing songs from stage shows and classic records. Sometimes, I think the average was two thousand letters a week and a lot of contact and, of course, we did the Road Show.
