About this deal

Bear's laboratory has substantially advanced knowledge of how cerebral cortex is modified by experience. Although I hadn't thoroughly read through other textbooks for a fair comparison, I found the short stories and 'paths to discovery' to be exciting and inspiring, and they were sprinkled all throughout the textbook.

Herbert Ballou University Professor of Neuroscience and a Professor of Medical Science at Brown University and the Alpert Medical School. He has served on the editorial boards of numerous journals, including the Journal of Neuroscience, Journal of Neurophysiology, Cerebral Cortex, and Brain Structure and Function. I leave you leave with questions to ponder--Is the brain the fundamental last frontier or is it the cosmos? I was actually surprised and disappointed when the book suddenly ended with so many questions left unanswered -- but I guess that's how science goes.He has been at the forefront of the efforts to translate knowledge of autism pathophysiology into new treatments. Although, I can point out some issues that may have been fixed in the 4th edition, as I have read the 3rd edition. Love Neuroscience and this textbook was interesting to read but I think it needed more helpful summary of the end of the chapters or quizzes. The new Fourth Edition has been fully updated to reflect these and other rapid advances in the field, while honoring its commitment to be student-friendly with striking new illustrations, additional animations, and an unparalleled array of online resources. He made fundamental discoveries on bidirectional synaptic plasticity, metaplasticity, the molecular basis of amblyopia (a cause of visual disability in children), and the pathophysiology of fragile X syndrome (the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability and autism).

I entered a Doctorate level Advanced Neuroscience class in 2013 without any previous history in Biology (beyond 1 semester of 7th grade Bio and high school Marine Biology -- oy! Otherwise the book was both a good textbook and an interesting helpful book to pass my neuroscience class. D. in physiology and pharmacology from Duke University in 1979, and then pursued postdoctoral training with David Prince and Stephen Waxman at the Stanford University School of Medicine. For systems neuroscience students, I'd advise Larry Squire's Fundamental Neuroscience for Systems Neuroscience over this, as it has more chapters dedicated to functions of the nervous system (sleep, pain etc.In general terms, the concepts are explained extraordinarily well and in an arrangement that gradually builds an understanding of the underlying cellular mechanics so the reader (astoundingly) doesn't find themselves over their heads when later chapters paint the broader pictures of memory and learning. Great book for even introductory readers like me who is trying to understand what goes on between ears. Highly detailed introduction to neuroscience, providing a comprehensive explanation of the core molecular, cellular and functional areas of the brain. Though the book may seem complex at times, it still provides a clear understanding of important brain functions such as metacognition and neuroplasticity. It also makes it really entertaining in how it links basic science with the clinical aspect by tracking it down from discovery to practice. Acclaimed for its clear, friendly style, excellent illustrations, leading author team, and compelling theme of exploration, Neuroscience: Exploring the Brain, Fourth Edition takes a fresh, contemporary approach to the study of neuroscience, emphasizing the biological basis of behaviour. It's not an easy book to read for a novice in the field but surely provides insights on the wonders of our brain and could be useful as a foundation for further studies in neuroscience, psycology and human behavior. Some are essential to make our site work; others help us improve the user experience or allow us to effectively communicate with you. Paradiso is course director of Brown's popular introductory neuroscience course, for which Neuroscience: Exploring the Brain was written. The Fourth Edition has been fully updated to reflect these and other rapid advances in the field, while honouring its commitment to be student-friendly with striking new illustrations, additional animations, and an unparalleled array of online resources. This book lacks fine detail, especially with respect to electrophysiology, computational approaches and molecular neuroscience.
