About this deal

What did he make of home secretary Suella Braverman’s trip to Rwanda, designed to portray it as a safe haven? “I’ve been to Rwanda,” he says, slowly. “I’ve sat with victims of the genocide who were limbless or had lost loved ones … There’s something about Suella Braverman and her politics that I think would traditionally sit at the fringe of the Conservative party, certainly the Conservative party when I came into parliament.” Of course, saying that a war is not imminent or inevitable is very different from saying that it’s inconceivable. In his own speech to the forum, China’s defence minister, General Li Shangfu, emphasised that China wants peace. Who doesn’t? But he also argued that it’s China’s historic mission to take over Taiwan, the independently governed island that it claims is an indispensable part of the People’s Republic of China. The general condemned the United States and he lambasted the Democratic Progressive party, the DPP, which runs Taiwan for allegedly leading the Taiwanese people away from the Chinese motherland. The general emphasised that China is prepared to go to war over Taiwan. A poster for the podcast that Rory Stewart with co-hosts with Alastair Campbell Photograph: Goalhanger Podcasts

David Lammy: The Future of Foreign Policy – The Rest Is

It will require the retooling of the [ Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office], in a way that is shaped by the reality of new technologies, the rise of economic nationalism, and the paralysis of the post-war multilateral system.” UK exports have fallen Marina, his widow, battled for justice successfully in both a UK public enquiry and a case at the European Court of Human Rights. Yeah. And you know, if you’re foreign secretary in 18 months’ time or whatever it is, could the world expect any change in British policy to this part of the world, or would you see continuity? Does Britain’s relationship with the USA prevent independent decision making? What does conservatism mean to Jordan Peterson? How do you disagree agreeably about politics with your partner? Well, the Conservative government have got themselves into a real mess on migration with the extraordinarily high figures when they went into successive elections saying that they would bring those figures down. And we challenged them on that, as we rightly should. You cannot cut our aid budget and then spend what’s left in the UK and not face up to supporting people to stay in-country because of issues of climate and conflict at this time, particularly in the Horn of Africa. When I speak to partner countries like France, I was in Portugal a few weeks ago. They’re raising real concerns in the Sahel and asking how can the UK play a bigger role with us in dealing with these issues in-country?With slavery, as I understand it. And of course I know because I’ve got, you know, longstanding roots in the Caribbean, that there is a very real debate going on in the Caribbean about these issues at this time. I still think in the end that the Commonwealth does provide an important forum for countries to come together as equals. I think it’s really interesting that countries like Togo, Gabon, Rwanda are joining that Commonwealth club. even. Our second episode with Yuval will be released next Monday, where he talks about history, AI, and the future of humankind. I thought it was surprising to hear him call out the DPP in a political party in Taiwan. And I thought also that his attitude to the Taiwan Strait effectively as an extension of China is in contradiction to the perceptions of, say, a country like the Philippines or indeed Japan. That is the truth of it. So there’s no doubt about it, these are dangerous times, which is why dialogue — the need for China to be able to answer the phone and to avoid escalation — I think I leave concerned about that. As the former High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs, Cathy Ashton worked with many world leaders: Vladimir Putin in Russia, Serbia's Ivica Dacic, Kosovo's Hashim Thaci, and Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. We think it is bizarre that the UK does not currently under the government have structured dialogue with the European Union in a constructive way.

This week on Leading, Alastair and Rory are joined by former Secretary of State for Health, Alan Milburn. Alan is credited for delivering modernisation to the NHS in the New Labour years, introducing foundation trusts, and is Rory’s hero for his work on reform. In the second of two episodes, Rory and Alastair are joined once again by former Conservative Prime Minister, Theresa May.Last night, as Starmer used a speech at the meeting hosted by the Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau to say Labour would rebuild “the smouldering cinders of the bridges the Tories have burnt” in relations with other countries, Lammy said closer links with the EU were the number one goal. What is Theresa May’s biggest regret from her time as Home Secretary? Why was the Hillsborough disaster such an abuse of power? What’s it like to stay on as an MP after occupying the highest office in the land? On today's episode of Leading Alastair and Rory are joined by Mustafa Suleyman as he recounts his rise from North London council estate to the vanguard of the tech revolution. Would an Israeli ground invasion shift international perceptions of the conflict? Why is Labour unhappy with the Lib Dems? Is China teetering on the brink of economic chaos? But around lots of things, which sounded like, you know, they were prepared to fight when he also said we won’t ever renounce force. Do you get to go to China? Have you ever been?
