About this deal

In foxes, considering their nocturnal and covert lifestyle and well-developed VNS, an olfactory signal would be more effective than a visual one. As such, animals that use pheromones to convey specific messages deliberately place them in areas where other members of their own species are likely to find them.

We have used solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to analyze the urinary volatiles in 15 free-ranging wild foxes (2 female) living in farmlands and bush in Victoria, Australia. Recently, while trailing in Algonquin Park with the Earth Tracks Wildlife Tracking Apprenticeship some of us bent down on different occasions to smell Eastern Timber Wolf/Algonquin Wolf ( Canis lycaon), Red Fox ( Vulpes vulpes), and River Otter ( Lontra canadensis) scent marks, which were usually small deposits of urine placed in a prominent spot along the animal’s trail. Isoprenoids are synthesized in plants from Δ3-isopentenyl diphosphate, and include terpenoids, carotenoids and steroids [ 91]. Thus, their expression as odourant molecules may act as a reliable olfactory signal of good nutrition. This is one of five allegorical paintings in his "The Five Senses" set and illustrates how smells have a powerful ability to invoke feelings and memories. From their red fox skulls, they calculated that the presence of turbinals allowed dog foxes an olfactory mucosa of about 456 sq-cm (70 sq-in), while vixens accommodated 396 sq-cm (61 sq-in). The acetophenone finding may be quite significant, since in no other animal has it been found in such abundance. The terpenoids, β-myrcene, linalool, β-cyclocitral, trans-geraniol and trans-geranyl acetone, are volatile C10-13 scent compounds present in leaves and flowers [ 93], and are frequent urinary findings in herbivores and omnivores.

And I don't want to force them into a motel with me, or worse yet, make them live in the unbearably stunk-up house. Heard from a close friend that he'd mentioned this elsewhere on here and it got a little attention, so I thought I'd come here and share my side of the story.Coyote urine and the urine of larger predators is a better choice for deer and other larger animals, and is also reported to work against woodchuck, raccoon, skunk, and smaller mammals. Although acetophenone is not usually reported in human urine, in one study its excretion was found to increase after the experimental induction of inflammation [ 90].
