About this deal

An indoor herb garden kit makes it easy to grow herbs indoors. If you’re new to gardening or have a busy schedule, you may not have the time or experience to grow herbs the old-fashioned way. Choosing seeds, soil, plant pots, and everything else requires time and careful planning. Combining soil, six colors of paint, and young children could prove a bit messy — but we say lay down some newspaper and let them go to town! Kids can watch their seedlings grow into fresh herbs that they've tended to by themselves, making it a learning opportunity and an introduction to gardening as much as a new source of tasty herbs. Frymark says certain plants (like basil and chives) do well with lots of sunlight, while others will require lower light levels. If a sunny spot isn’t available, LED grow lights mimic normal sunlight and allow the plants to photosynthesize. Some systems even include dimming features along with automatic timers that’ll keep lights on for the majority of the day. What is the maintenance level? Keep your indoor garden close to the kitchen. Placing it in an area that you pass by daily ensures that you'll always be monitoring your plants to keep them growing strong.

This kit comes with all the necessary accessories and takes the guesswork out of growing herbs indoors. These jars come in six different colors, but note that each color corresponds to a specific herb. The jars are made of recycled glass and can be reused or repurposed. We read a few complaints about missing pieces, so be sure to thoroughly inspect the jars upon arrival. If you have a bit more time and space to devote to your indoor-gardening experiments, Rise Gardens is a great upgrade option, a favorite of mine and of Strategist senior writer Liza Corsillo, who says she was “blown away by the variety of different vegetables (and sheer volume of food) we could grow” in the brand’s larger garden (below). I’ve used it to grow generations of produce — basil, arugula, lettuce, tatsoi, cabbage — which taste like the high-definition version of the produce I buy at the grocery store. When Corsillo ran a blind taste test of the basil produced by four kinds of smart gardens, Rise Gardens came in first place. You'll receive soil discs and seeds to sprout basil, parsley, and cilantro, which nestle into a simple and attractive wooden planter. Since there's no LED lamp, you'll need to find a sunny spot near a window for optimum plant health. Though there's only enough space for three types of herbs, it's easy enough to swap out plants as you use up the growth. It's tough to find anything to complain about with this kit — especially at such an approachable price point!

Even if your home doesn’t have optimal lighting, the AeroGarden Harvest has a 20-watt LED light system on a timer, which provides simulated sunshine that allows your herbs to thrive. There’s no messy soil required, and it only takes a few steps to complete the setup. With this option, you can grow not only one, but six herbs at a time. (The kit comes with basil, curly parsley, dill, thyme, Thai basil, and mint pods.) Caring for them is easy, thanks to an indicator that lets you know when it’s time to refill the water or add the provided liquid plant food. Types of growing systems While growing herbs indoors is quite easy, it will take some time to become a skilled herb gardener," says Jokiniemi. "Enjoy the process, and don't be afraid of failure!" How much light does an indoor herb garden need? Spend a minute or two each day paying attention to your plants. “It’s easy to catch problems when they’re small,” Judd says. “Even ‘no work’ indoor gardens benefit from a caring gardener.”

After all, seeds are inexpensive, and using high-quality seeds ensures the best results and flavor,” Beausoleil says. At Select, we work with experts who have specialized knowledge and authority based on relevant training and/or experience. We also take steps to ensure all expert advice and recommendations are made independently and without undisclosed financial conflicts of interest. Indoor herb gardens work, provided you don’t rely entirely on the base instructions. Every plant has different requirements, in terms of soil, watering, and light. So for basil, you’ll need more moisture, but excellent drainage, while sage, mint, and rosemary will thrive in most conditions provided they don’t sit in damp soil. Do you want a herb garden kit with integrated lighting? (perfect if your place doesn’t have much natural light)If you’re looking for a great garden gift to give this year, Garden Republic’s kit is a great option. But it also makes a great gift for yourself. How to Choose the Best Kitchen Herb Garden Kits for Your Home First, consider what herbs you want to grow. Maybe you already have a running list of herbs that you love or have been wanting to try growing. If not, consider which herbs you use most often.

Capacity: 8 to 36 pods | Microbe management: Includes two fertilizers, pH balancer, filter, and pump | Maintenance: Medium When comparing kits, make sure that you choose one with an appropriate number of herbs and containers that will fit well in your home’s sunny spots.

6. Seed Pantry

The Rise Gardens kit is higher-maintenance than AeroGarden’s system, though instructions on the app make tasks fairly straightforward. When it arrived, it took about half an hour to set up, and it requires weekly maintenance — adding fertilizer and a pH balancer to the tank and refilling water. Pods germinate for a week or two in a separate container before you move them to the garden; I’ve gotten better results when I keep a close eye on seedlings during this stage. The Rise Gardens grows larger plants than my AeroGarden Sprout, which comes with the occasional need for aggressive pruning to keep taller plants from overpowering shorter ones. (That can be a good excuse to make pesto or chermoula.) We would also add these separate plants to it, as we love mint and rosemary.
