What a pity the author was a sniveling scoundrel, creating paeans to Stalin while Polish patriots were receiving Stalin's nine grams in the backs of their heads mere furlongs from the great poet study! Despite a title which Google translates as "War Locomotive in Bedroom", and the text entirely in Polish (no English/German summaries), it is an exhaustive and well illustrated study of what became the most numerous steam locomotive type in Poland. I'd recommend the book to anyone interested in the Polish scene (from a modelling or historic viewpoint). Not only for children, this classic work of Julian Tuwim, Lokomotywa, is in three languages: Polish, English and German.

Two pictures ( above, below) in the 1958 edition (illustrated by Jan Lenica) remained in my memory long after the book had been given away. It’s only minor issues but enough for me to rate this less than 5 (though the original tales still get a 5). The Turnip is still my favourite story overall because of it’s ever growing group of characters pulling at the turnip and there’s funny illustrations of everyone holding on to everyone else. The book I remember reading was illustrated by a different person, Jan Marcin Szancer, which I did prefer as they were a little more colourful and the turnip looked huge, but this book I’m reviewing has been illustrated by the original illustrators all the way back in 1937!
