About this deal

The rest of the cast, namely Soo and the presenter, could understand Sweep perfectly, and would (albeit indirectly) translate for the viewer.

Sweep made his first appearance on Channel Four as himself in the eighth episode of the second series of The Harry Hill Show. Out of all the money raised by the teams at the auction, Sooty and the rest of the blue team made the most profit from the items they bought. While Creighton remained a part of the programme for a number of series, Longman was given a physical role as co-star in several episodes, alongside her role as Soo's voice actor, with the programme featuring several stories that ventured out into new locations.

HIT continued to struggle with the franchise from this point forward, and after the company was unable to offer ITV a new programme from the franchise in 2006, HIT announced in October 2007 that they had put the Sooty Limited/Bridgefilms subsidiary up for sale. Sooty has stated that his favourite magic trick is to make an egg appear on somebody's head, so that it can then smashed by Sweep.

Sooty first appeared on television in 1952 and was soon joined by his companions Sweep, a squeaky dog who loves bones and sausages, and Soo, Sooty's panda girlfriend. It’s something that was inspired by Harry Corbett’s attitude, who is known as ‘Sooty’s dad’ as the original, whereas Matthew and then Richard are ‘Sooty’s friend’. The move led to him expanding on the characters that featured in the programme, including: Butch, another dog who occasionally plays the part of a villain; Ramsbottom, a snake; and 'Enry the Robot, a robot with light up eyes who keeps breaking down. There are also smaller but no less significant moments in Sooty’s legacy that are dear to Richard’s heart, including his encounter backstage with an autistic young boy who rarely spoke.

In her appearance on The Weakest Link, it is revealed that she owns a pair of wellingtons and wore them to the show.

In 2013, UK Voiceover artist Peter Dickson gave Sooty a voice on a famous episode of The Sooty Show on TV, after remaining silent since 1948. There’s always been a few lines we throw in for the parents – Harry Corbett did it, Matthew Corbett did it – we always know who bought the ticket and who’s really watching, so we do play a little bit wide and we make sure everyone is included. In 2009, Sooty along with Sweep and Soo appeared in Peter Kay's Animated All Star Band music video on "Children in Need". It was produced by Cosgrove Hall Films (the producers of Count Duckula and Danger Mouse); they gave Sweep, and Scampi actual voices and kept Sooty the same, having to nod his head to say "yes" or "no" or miming what his ideas are. Phil revealed that Sweep gets a proper script and that he uses something similar to a saxophone reed to speak the part, making sure listeners can get a gist of all the syllables. Television history [ edit ] Harry Corbett era [ edit ] Sweep made his debut in 1957 and has remained a part of the franchise since his first appearance. The appeal of the mischievous bear to today’s children is exactly the same as it was to Cadell as a six-year-old, the presenter reckons.

Then, in the 1990s, Matthew Corbett sold the rights, which eventually ended up with Bridge Films, a company owned by HiT Entertainment, the owners of Bob the Builder and Thomas the Tank Engine, and, under their stewardship, the TV show lost viewers and was eventually axed. Over the years, there have been several attempts to meddle with the Sooty formula, but he’s always been saved by those who loved him. On Tuesday April 9th, 2013, Sooty and Sweep and Soo appeared as the judging panel in one episode of "The Matt Lucas Awards" Season 2. Harry Corbett famously bought the first Sooty puppet on Blackpool’s North Pier for seven shillings and six pence in 1948 to entertain his children. In 2001, when the new owners of Sooty, Hit Entertainment, overhauled the production Sheila Clark became the voice of Soo in the second and third series of Sooty from 2001 - 2004.It became almost a school lesson with not a single joke in the damn thing, and ITV said, ‘Kids aren’t watching it like they used to.
