About this deal

What do you do when your fifth grader tells you he's reading the greatest book ever and he wants you to try it? You do whatever it takes to find that book and you read it with him. Enthusiasm is contagious...and supporting a child's love for reading is priceless. Someone uses mud to write hostile things about the people of Ember on the plaza and on the wall of the hotel. Someone also dumps a bunch of mud, garbage, and leaves in the hotel which causes the people of Ember to get terrible, itchy rashes after they clean it up. It turns out that the person who did these things was one of Ember's own people who was intentionally trying to increase hostilities so he could lead an army and get glory for himself in the war he intentionally tried to start.

Further on down the line are several paintings we’ve seen before, in the Mayor’s office. They are the portraits of the various Mayor’s, including Bill Murray’s correct and ruined versions. Although an actor in the film will be the on screen artist, in reality they all come from the hand Martin, who like Ruth, still does quite a lot of his work personally. The City of Ember is an engaging children's fiction novel that introduces young readers to courageous characters who take steps to make change happen. The author Jeanne DuPrau writes age-appropriate fantasy/dystopia with mystery, action, adventure, and an exciting cliffhanger that keeps kids interested in the series. My son absolutely LOVES this book! Loves it so much he doesn't want to watch the film adaption for fear of ruining his reading experience (he has learned this lesson early in life LOL). As soon as he finished reading his library copy, he took his allowance money to buy the book so he can own it (I'm SOOOOO proud!). I read this book along with him and I have to say it was pretty good! If you have a young person in your care that needs some reading recommendations, offer this title for them to consider! It is the first of four books so it should keep readers busy for a while. The City of Ember is a post-apocalyptic novel by Jeanne DuPrau that was published in 2003. The story is about Ember, a post-apocalyptic underground city threatened by aging infrastructure and corruption. The young protagonists, Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow, follow clues left behind by the original builders of the City of Ember, to safety in the outside world. In Sparks there are some rather significant changes to the plot dynamics which allow for some intriguing new commentary on humanity and social interactions. We're given a post-apocalyptic world in which humanity is trying to recover and rebuild. This high level genre is compounded by being seen primarily through the eyes of children and also by making the Emberites ignorant of the disasters that befell humanity or even of human history at all. In fact, through the entire first book, they had no knowledge of any other human culture at all and thought their microcosm to be the extent of humanity.Sutton, Roger (May–June 2003). "Jeanne DuPrau The City of Ember". Horn Book Magazine. 79 (3): 343. ISSN 0018-5078.

Many hundreds of years ago, the city of Ember was created by the Builders to contain everything needed for human survival. It worked…, but now the storerooms are almost out of food, crops are blighted, corruption is spreading through the city and worst of all—the lights are failing. Soon Ember could be engulfed by darkness… But when two children, Lina and Doon, discover fragments of an ancient parchment, they begin to wonder if there could be a way out of Ember. Can they decipher the words from long ago and find a new future for everyone? Will the people of Ember listen to them? The water wheel will be CGI, we’ve just created our own little one, but the distance on film will be much greater than our actual stage will allow. This will be one of the last things we shoot. There will be real water; it will be about three feet high. As the water level rises they make their way up to the highest level and then they’ve [Lina, Doon and Poppy] got nothing else to do but get in their boat and take it. So that’s going to be a lot of fun.”

I think his dad built it as a way, because Doon’s raised in a single parent home, partially for function and partially to amuse his son and that’s why some of it is a little bit unnecessary but I think is the sort of thing that would really bring a glow to a kids eyes. And, oh my…” and then he niftly breaks it. I can only imagine there is a props person outside somewhere preparing to commit seppuku. A realistic post-apocalyptic world. DuPrau’s book leaves Doon and Lina on the verge of undiscovered country and readers wanting more.”—USA Today The audio narration is pretty good, if old-school. The most annoying thing was the way the mayor’s dialogue would pause every three words for the super-fat mayor to catch his breath.
