About this deal

It is a kids book, so there is improvement, but there is some stark frankness and reality to the story. The airships, especially Harriet’s airship, which I can’t say much about because it would be a spoiler. They will feel completely transported to another world of The Three Continents, Lontown and the Slumps.

All of our books are 100% brand new, unread and purchased directly from the publishers in bulk allowing us to pass the huge savings on to you! The death of Ernest leaves his two children, Arthur and Maudie, orphaned and homeless as an unscrupulous insurance worker informs them that due to their father breaking clause one hundred and fifty two of the Explorer Code all of the Brightstorm possessions are to be repossessed. There is such humanity and empathy in this writing, which takes this story beyond the readable to the memorable. The twins refuse to believe their father would ever do such a thing and, despite their bleak circumstances following their father’s death, decide to travel to South Polaris to learn the truth about their father’s death and clear his name. Les jumeaux Brightstorm apprennent qu'ils ont tout perdu après les revers de leur père parti en exploration.

It feels like she is speaking directly to the reader and demanding that we enjoy seeing and experiencing new things on the way to our end destination. Twins Maudie and Arthur Brightstorm are left alone in the world when their explorer father dies on a daring expedition to the unchartered territory South Polaris.

I thought it started out a little rough and ten pages in I didn't think too much of it, but it took off, especially once the adventure was underway. When publication day finally arrived, we made a special trip to Waterstones Leeds to see Darkwhispers and purchase additional copies.I do think that the mystery could’ve been more, y’know, ~mysterious~, as it was kinda obvious all the way through… but oh well *shrugs* It didn’t really affect my enjoyment in the long run. This is one of my go-to recommends for readers aged 8+, as Vashti's world-building powers are on a par with Philip Reeve or Philip Pullman, but the books are a much easier read for a slighter younger audience. Clues are collected, they all add up nicely and leave very little in the way of loose ends, and the end of the tale sets us up for the next one in a straightforward manner.
