About this deal

The text by Terri Windling first appeared in Realms of Fantasy magazine and The Journal of Mythic Arts; updated in 2017. Behind the scenes, she was also involved with Brian's publications, sometimes editing or ghost-writing the text.

I start each painting by drawing a geometrical grid based on the Golden Section, a system of proportions and perspective developed by the ancient Greeks. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. The whole book is pretty delightful, even for--or perhaps especially for--those who couldn't stand Froud's pretty, ethereal faeries. Lessons include translating and reading runes, skaldic speaking, calendar customs, and safely traversing the nine worlds while avoiding trolls, dragons, and giants! The faeries kept insisting on taking form under my pencil, emerging on the page before me, cloaked in archetypal shapes drawn from nature and myth.

Abrams 2004) - Berk and Froud once again join forces, lifting the moldy latch and opening the door to the world of GOBLINS! After all these years of drawing, painting, and sculpting them, Wendy and I are often asked if we 'believe' in faeries. With the Death Watch in hand, Silas begins to unearth Lichport’s secret history—and discovers that he has inadvertently taken on his father’s mantle as Lichport’s Undertaker. In traditional lore, one often finds that faeries have some striking defect of form: some are hollow-backed or elongated, others have goat- or lion-feet. But he's about to learn that Amos was no mere mortician: he was the Undertaker of Lichport, charged with bringing The Peace to the dead trapped in the Shadowlands and Mist Homes, those states of limbo binding spirits to earth.

Yound Edward takes his friend, Myrtle, a bespectacled rationalist, into the wood to show her Godlins, popping up all around, but invisible to her. In this atmospheric place, they set about creating a thoroughly magical environment filled with faeries, goblins, trolls, William Morris fabrics, antique toys, and shelves crowded with folklore texts. Goblins' is a fun, funny, smelly, sticky guide, reproducing pages of the ancient and odoriferous Codex Goblinensis; including a first-ever Field Guide that will help identify the various types of goblins; a gazetteer of photos of goblins taken with the arcane, and highly temperamental, Goblin Camera; and a section that helps you know if you've 'got goblins' and what to do about it. Myth surrounds us every day, particularly in a landscape as soaked in history and old stories as Dartmoor.Through this book's charms (poems), tellings (stories), gifts (ponderings), and lavish illustrations (by Brian Froud) we learn that the right words can still open a door into Elfland, into wonder, and that storied landscapes are all around us, even now, waiting to be discovered. In 1975, Brian moved from London to a small Devon village at Dartmoor's edge, sharing a house with fellow-illustrator Alan Lee and his family. Toby ended up with a role in the film: playing the baby stolen by the Goblin King (David Bowie) and rescued by his sister (Jennifer Connelly). While walking through the woods Edward pointed out all the Goblins he could see to Myrtle, and there were plenty to be seen. Goblins is a book full of fun and surprises, it is also a book that has been well loved and seen a lot of use; at least my copy has.
